playing the final 62 games at .500 would get them 95 wins.

Three way tie for first in the NL Central right now, and if the Phillies were in that division they'd have a 11.5 game lead.

The Phils win their 64th game today. Last year's 64th win came on Aug. 13.

I'm sure someone's had this hunch before but it hit me today that because of Ryan Howard's boom and bust style at the plate he's more aggressive in hitters' counts than he should be. Baseball-Reference's splits page gives sOPS+ for each ball-strike count, meaning the adjusted OPS relative to the rest of the league in that situation. After 3-1 counts, Howard's sOPS+ this year is 43, 30 points lower than his next worst situation. He's only had 43 PAs where that's happened, so it could be a sample size issue, but basically pitchers can pitch around him hoping to get ahead of him, and if they get down 3-1 they still have hope to get him to swing at junk looking for a fastball. His OBP is decent (.442) in those situations because he's already got a 3-ball count, but he hits .172 and slugs only .310. He's struck out 16 times in those 43 PAs. So more than 1/3 of the time a pitcher gets behind him 3-1 they come back to strike him out anyway.

He's really good when he hits the first pitch into play, monstrous on 1-0 counts, and basically league-average when he puts 2-0 and 3-0 pitches in play. I suppose that's what happens when you guess a lot. But somebody needs to tell him to be a little more patient when he's got such a huge advantage at the plate.

It appears this isn't consistent with his career numbers, that he's generally been very good after hitters' counts. So maybe it's just the sample size thing. It seems a little weird. Maybe this means he's just due for regression and he'll go on a tear over the next couple months.
no offense but you are everything that's wrong with America

Forgot how far behind the Phillies were on the morning of July 25th last year, six back of Atl, only 1.5 ahead of the Mets, only three in front of fourth place. Really turned on the jets after that.

At their current win percentage, they'd win 104 games. (Well, not exactly, but there's really no such thing as .68 of a win.)

How many hits does he have? Cause, you know, the writers are stupid

1)my ability to misspell names amazes me

2) He's got a shot at 200 HR, 450 SB and 2500 hits. Wanted to see how that compares in this era, along with his MVP,#aura 2007/GG seasons/WFC

Needs 35 more HRs, 86 SB, 679 more hits.

I had no idea Bruce Ruffin had a son - Chance - and that he has recently been called up to the Detroit Tigers. In fact, his b-r page doesn't even seem to know this: http://www.baseball-reference.com/playe ... ch01.shtml

Question on the Luxury tax.

Is it on everything AFTER 170 or whatever million or do they then tax you on the entire payroll?

i thought it was on the entire payroll when you went over the threshhold. i know that normal taxes don't work that way but i thought MLB's did.

ha...jimmie.

all look doable. no chance for 3k. he'd have to get 200 hits the next 3 years to make it interesting. missing all those games from 08-10 killed that longshot.
