at the end of the day, I have zero confidence in any defensive metrics, which makes WAR kinda gay and probably unfairly penalizes Howard, even though he almost certainly sucks defensively
I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.

All I know is Howard is the preeminent power hitter our generation and the rest of those guys aren't.

He only sucks if you like when your first baseman attempts to throw the ball to second it goes there instead of left field. Although I will say, I think he is better at digging balls out of the dirt now than he was earlier in his career.

He's only made 1 error this season and he'll win the Gold Glove.

A Gold Glove is kinda like a Noble Peace Prize. They are pretty fucking pointless anymore.

Outfielders with more WAR than Victorino, 2006-2011: Matt Holliday, Curtis Granderson, Ryan Braun, Ichiro Suzuki, Jayson Werth, Carl Crawford, Carlos Beltran.

First baseman with more WAR than Howard, 2006-2011: Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera, Mark Teixeira, Kevin Youkilis, Adrian Gonzalez, Prince Fielder, Joey Votto, Lance Berkman, Carlos Pena, Justin Morneau, Derrek Lee

I just can't get worked up about stuff like this. Whatever Howard is as a ballplayer, he is a Phillies and will be a Phillies for a long time. Looking at this stuff is like looking at houses or cars after you've already purchased and committed to one - you only torture yourself.

Is Howard overpaid? Maybe. Do I still :h: him? Yes.

Historically, they've often been awarded to guys who hit good. Guys also started receiving them a few years after they should have started and then would get them after they didn't really deserve them any more.

Article talking about the Phills inquiring on Ludwick in SD then added this nugget...

Morosi adds that the Phillies and Cardinals are among the teams that have checked in with Padres GM Jed Hoyer on relievers Heath Bell and Chad Qualls.

I like Qualls, although his K rate is down this year. Still a big GB guy with good control. I think he's underrated as a middle reliever due to his ability to get out LHB (career 3.39 xFIP vs LHB, 3.55 vs RHB). Although he only makes 1.5mm this year, they have a 6mm team option (1mm buyout) on him for next year which they probably won't pick up, due to other good in-house options and low payroll. Should be pretty cheap in a trade because of this option and lack of even Type B FA status.

The Phanatic was wounded last night:

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Phillie Phanatic was taken to the hospital after being struck by a foul ball at an IronPigs baseball game at Coca-Cola Park here.

A spokeswoman for Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest told The Morning Call that Tom Burgoyne, the man inside the Philadelphia Phillies mascot's costume, was treated in the emergency room Wednesday night and later released.

The Phanatic was entertaining behind the first-base dugout in the top of the third inning when a foul ball from the Indianapolis Indians hit his neck , the area around Burgoyne's head. The Phanatic acted wounded but kept clowning for a while until he later left the stadium and went to the hospital.

To go along with that, our team ERA has dropped below 3 to 2.98.

Shut him down for as long as it takes for him to be completely healthy. Team really doesn't need him right now even if he's awesome, so don't rush things.
