I'm not commenting on the brillian analysis. Rather, I want to highlight the awesomeness of not being a mere playoff team, but being the playoff team the other playoff teams don't want to face. Also, the assumption Russo was making was that the Phillies would finish with the best record in the NL and thus be the first seed.

I realize the Phillies are going to be really tough in a 5 game series. Russo pointed out that the if the Phillies had the best NL record, they'd get to choose whether they'd get a day off between game 1 and game 2, and assuming they took the day off, that gave them even a greater advantage. It really is a change getting a ton of respect in the national media from a mere few years ago.

His old partner Francesa was absolutely gushing today about what a great WS matchup Yankees/Phillies would be. Loves the Phillies team. But who doesn't.

*Thinks about bumping threads but won't*

Once they made the Oswalt trade, I've been nothing but sunshine and candy, baby.

Only problem is you went from "Sell everyone, this team sucks", to "no way we don't win the World Series". I mean, Oswalt was a SAFECO deal, but to say he's that big of a difference maker is the definition of hyperbole.

The Phillies are awesome right now and I like our chances, but there is a chance we don't win the WS.

Indeed, the internets are serious business.

Anyway, I wish to contesr jh's notion that there are only two reasons to show a little humility in these situations. First of all, showing a little humility helps you not to come off as an arrogant creep. Imagine this imperfect analogy: you and five other people are interviewed for a job, one right after another. Improbably, you then all get together for a drink afterwards. Now, you might know that you nailed the interview, and know you are the most qualified guy for the job among them. But you aren't going to win many friends at the table if you start telling everyone else that you've locked up the job, they should all go check the classifieds because they're all still looking for work, etc. This is imperfect as analogy because obviously everyone here is a Phils fan, so we're not acting as if our shit don't stink to or in front of Braves fans, Giants fans, etc., but if you want to know why I err on the side of humility, this is a big part of the reason: I don't want to come across as an ass.

But there is yet another reason: if I were manager, and I came into the locker room and heard the players making their World Series plans, you better believe I would call a team meeting and air them out a little bit, telling them to concentrate on the task at hand. As a fan, I see no reason to take an attitude I wouldn't accept from the players.

I'm all for enjoying your team and way you want. If someone wants to talk (pretty well deserved) dookie on the internets I'm all for it.

After living through 1964, I never get too confident myself. But i try to enjoy my team's historically rare success as much as I can.

And I don't believe in internet jinxes or double reverse jinxes or that stuff.

I mean, I should hasten to add (because I don't mean to imply) that I don't think anyone here is an arrogant jerk or anything. Baseball and message boards are fantasies, to some degree, where you get to do things you don't do in "outside" life, and that's fine, I understand why people do it. I just can't bring myself to do it, and it makes me nervous to watch other people do it who are on my side. We on BSG are sort of like a big family. In the same way if I were out with my real family and one of them started getting a little too cocky I might take them aside and say, "Hey, be careful, don't cultivate the hate!", I am tempted, because of my personality, to do the same thing here. I have trained myself, and been trained, to avoid arrogance at all costs. Can't overcome my own programming, and it's the thing most likely to draw a "Hold on, wait a minute" from me in others.

Since it was my post that started this conversation, I was only pumped by the fact that the it's a sign of success that the national sports media see the Phillies as the team to beat in the national league and I enjoyed it.

We're 26 games over .500. The fact that 95 wins is 8-6 away is insane.

This is where your analogy goes to die. We ARE NOT the players on the team. We have zero effect on the outcomes of every game. Zero. Getting all worried they might blow a lead when there is NOTHING you can do to prevent it is the worst mentality in the world to have in my opinion.
Do I get worried when runners on the other team get on base during a game, especially late in the game? Of course.
Do I start saying to myself? "Oh no! If only I hadn't said a statistically likely outcome would occur tonight! This is all my fault."
"My hip is fucked up. I'm going to Africa for two weeks."

Media: Charlie, if somebody had told you in March or April that with 14 games to play that Carlos Ruiz would be leading the team in hitting and batting .300 what would you say?

Uncle Chollie: "I think that's good hittin' Chooch! That's what I would say. I'd say, 'way to go Chooch!'"

Image
Incidentally, I have watched this clip a hundred times and I still can't figure out what the heck Chooch is saying here...

I purchased the "Phillies Memories" DVD tonight at CBP. Unlike most of the Phillies DVDs, which are in-house productions, this is actually a production of MLB. It's a review of the history of the team, with a heavy emphasis on the 2003-2008 period. Because it's a MLB production, though, it has a lot of video I'd never seen before - particularly from the 1974-1983 - and alternate calls that you don't always hear, like Franzke's call of the last pitch of the 2007 season. Also, I am pretty sure it's the last of these sorts of videos that Harry the K ever narrated for the Phillies. Well worth the $20.

Anyway, this DVD reminded me, in case I forget:

Can't remember if I've seen that or not. Also, Franzke's call on break at work is how I experienced the 2007 clincher. Good times.

Confusingly, there are two DVDs with similar titles:

Phillies Memories: The Greatest Moments in Philadelphia Phillies History

Philadelphia Phillies Memories

You got the second one right?

No, I got the first one... the second one is only available from a non-Amazon seller. I suspect it is really the same as the DVD I just got, just with some weird prototype cover or something.
