About 2 summers ago I did some work at the mayor of West Chester's house. He was telling me how he really wanted to bring a minor league team to WC. He wanted to build a park in the abandoned lot on Bolmar Street. I would love this.

I get PHL17 on my cable system unexpectedly, so a few games a week on the TV in addition to MLB.tv. Nice.

Still watching SNY this weekend, unless the game is bad.

Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco(notes) is playing with a small break in his left elbow, but is postponing surgery until after the season because Philadelphia is in a pennant race.

Polanco is batting .308 with six homers and 47 RBIs for the NL East-leading Phillies, who had a half-game lead over Atlanta entering play Thursday.

“I have a broken elbow, but it is rather small and will be operated on at the end of the year,” Polanco told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “It is something minor, less than half an hour (the surgery), and rehabilitation will take only a month. I have not been operated on before because I would have lost the season if I did it.”

Not sure if this was posted elsewhere, but the NYT has an article on the Phillies

It’s Late Summer, and the Phillies Are on the Move

It is nice to have options, in your wardrobe and your pitching staff. Just ask Ruben Amaro, the general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Amaro has a World Series championship ring from 2008 and a National League ring from last season. These days he wears the N.L. ring, because the Phillies somehow win more often when he does.

“I’m very superstitious,” said Amaro, who nonetheless tempted fate with his boldest off-season move....

That's great

Most other teams, the Mets included, are probably weary these days. The Phillies, as usual, are just getting started.

Matt Gelb:

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/201 ... Phils.html

Now Lawrence had to prove Brown's value to his bosses. During the day, the contingent of Phillies scouts took Brown and his father to a field. Wolever made a few changes to Brown's swing, and the 18-year-old was quick to adapt. Later that night, Brown took the suggestions into one of Redan's games and flourished.

"At that point," Wolever said, "we got all excited."

The scouting director gave Lawrence a salary figure to work with and told him to return with Brown and his father to their house.

"We put it in Chip's hands and said, 'Hey, we need to get this done. So, Chip, go get him,' " Wolever said. "That's exactly what he did. He went right in and got it done that night."

Brown signed for approximately $200,000, well over the recommended slot.

Huh. I could see Betz and the Buck boys being willing to cash out, but I get the sense from Middleton - already a billionaire - that he would like to be MORE involved, not less. Is the offer from him to buy out his partners mewonders?

Could be some sort of Middleton/Comcast co-ownership, similar to Snider's deal (according to Wiki he retains 34% of Comcast Spectacor).

Wow, I never realized Snider owned so much of the teams at this point. It makes sense though, so I'm not sure why I never realized it. DERR

Halladay has 4 more starts I think. I really hope he wins two of them just because it would be nice to have a 20 game winner.

If Roy doesn't get the Cy Young, I'd be bummer. He has 20 more IPs and 25 less BBs and 10 more Ks than Wainwright at this point, who is probably his closest competition. The ERA and WHIP of both guys are very similar. Hopefully Wainwright will have a rocky start in these last few games to send those numbers a few ticks above Roy.

It's really great seeing boilerplate articles about how good the Phillies are in September. Much better than boilerplate articles about booing santa.

Cholly will never get any respect until he wins a WFC.
