I don't think anyone has been more wrong in a 1:52 time frame than that right there. Dudez we shoulda traded for fielder.

Man, that 14 year old kid never saw you guys coming. I heard an 8 year old say Ryan Howard was the best player in baseball the other day, I'll post a video so you can all rip his heart open shortly.

Not sure I should post this here or in the "pity/hate" the Mets thread, but, I think I'd heard this once before, but its significance never really dawned on me:

Wikipedia wrote:There were occasional attempts to move the Dodgers back to Brooklyn. State senator Tom Bartosiewicz tried hard to persuade them in the early 1980s, but was rebuffed. A stronger chance was in 1998, when the O'Malley family sold up to Rupert Murdoch's Fox company. In the course of bidding, a committee convened by the City and State of New York (including Roger Kahn, author of Boys of Summer) made an offer to the club which was turned down, despite being larger than the eventual sale price.

There was a serious offer to buy the Dodgers from a group that wanted to move them back to Brooklyn, that had the backing of the City and State of New York?

Holy shit, they really never did get over that out there in New York, did they? Most of all, I just love what this says about how much they just LOVE the Mets: even though it had zero chance, at all, of happening, the CITY AND STATE OF NEW YORK backed an effort to bring the Dodgers back to town. This, despite the fact that the Dodgers have led all MLB in attendance - by a margin of nearly 30 million over the second-place... you guessed it... NEW YORK Yankees - since they moved out to LA in 1958. I mean, honestly, by any measure, the Dodgers' move to Los Angeles is one of the all-time business success stories in ANY business, let alone baseball. But hey, let's get together a committee to make a serious bid to buy the team and move them back to Brooklyn - it's either that, or another godforsaken season of Mets baseball!

Apparently, the whole city and state government would do anything - ANYTHING - to have a NL alternative to Mets baseball.

Maybe the Wlipons, instead of ponying up any more dough for free agents, should just save their pennies and then offer Frank McCourt $100M or more for the name "Brooklyn Dodgers." Goodness knows McCourt is going to need it, and once Vin Scully retires, who gives a shit what they call that team?

Aaron Rowand has 2 years and 24 million dollars left on his contract and he barely ever gets off the bench in SF anymore.

People (not on here) wanted the Phillies to match the Giants offer. Glad they're not GMs.

2 years and $24M? Ouch. Wow. They gave him a 5 year deal? Holy shit.

On the other hand, instructive:

Aaron Rowand 2004-2007 (through age 29 season): .289/.348/.474/.822/109 OPS+/76 HR

Jayson Werth 2007-2010 (through age 31 season): .282/.380/.506/.885/131 OPS+/95 HR

Of course, Rowand didn't play full seasons in 2005 or 2006.

Werth has obviously been better than Rowand was, but Rowand's last year before FA was really good - .309/.374/.515/.889/124 OPS+/27 HR. The walk rate should have troubled prospective buyers more than it did, but Werth might always be a bust somewhere else, particularly 5 years from now.

These long term contracts are a bitch.

3 bad OF FA contracts that I can think of off the top of my head:

Aaron Rowand - SF Giants - 5 year 60 million 2008-2012
Juan Pierre - LA Dodgers - 5 year 44 million 2007-2011
Gary Matthews - LA Angels - 5 year 50 million 2007-2011

We'll see how Jason Bay's 4 year 66 million turns out.

It's crazy the kind of random articles you can find from 100 years ago on Google News archives. I don't even remember the original thing I was searching for, but starting browsing the Pittsburgh Press from October 1905 and found an article seemingly written by this guy saying they should move the pitcher's mound closer to the plate because it would improve hitting.

Naturally, this wouldn't be the case since the mound was closer before, and the year they moved it further back, averages went way up, but nonetheless, it's a wacky read.

This doesn't link directly to it, I don't think, but the article is from Oct 7th on page 8.
