Yeah it's dumb to retire a number for someone that never played for you (with exceptions like Jackie Robinson), but it's not any dumber than the Seahawks retiring #12 for "the fans"...

I may have mischaracterized this. They didn't retire #5 to honor Joe DiMaggio, they retired it to honor Carl Barger. They chose the #5 because Barger's favorite player was DiMaggio. Not that this makes it any less silly.

No worse than the Miami heat retiring 13 for Dan Marino.

Why don't they 'shift' all lefty hitters? I would.

Even the ones who always hit to left field like John Kruk?

We're closer to the Dodgers than the Marlins or Braves are to us. So we have that going for us, which is nice.

Here are monthly ERA totals for our heroes:

Overall: 5.63; 4.58; 4.38; 3.26

Starters: 6.35; 5.53; 4.10; 3.30

Relievers: 4.54; 2.99; 4.87; 3.18

11-3 in July -- pitching wins championships.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

If the Phillies aren't the best run organization in major league baseball, they're in the top 5.

I think whenever they pull boners like giving Moyer too much money we need to keep things in perspective. They're not the ones trying to unload Wells here.

Some are fast. Easier to throw out Ryan Howard from right field than a quicker guy.
