That the Marlins and Diamondbacks aren't in there, nor TMac/Wheeler, suggests just how abysmally bad the quality of announcing is around the game. Still, I can't quibble with the choices of the Nats (maybe my very least favorite) or White Sox, and Brenneman/Brantley is like something out of a nightmare.

Very few of them are good: I do like the SNY guys (mostly because of Hernandez; Darling is hit/miss, and Cohen is pretty generic), the Giants crew, Scully, and I think the Twins guys are probably decent.

We who grew up with Harry and Whitey had no idea how spoiled we were.

One of their common critiques of "bad" announcers seem to be homers, so it makes sense that McCarthy wouldn't be here.

Maybe teams just put their awful announcers on TV now

I thought the Brewers should have definitely been in the worst 5. Their analyst sounds like he has shit in his mouth at all times.

The Texas Rangers announcers would be in my top 5.

Yes, and I truly don't understand this. First of all, the term seems loose, to me, at best. What does someone mean when they call a broadcaster a "homer"? Do they mean the person just blindly praises the team he works for no matter what is going on, refuses to ever credit the opposition for a good play or performance, insists that every call that goes against the team he works for is a bad call, even when the evidence clearly shows otherwise, etc.? To me, if someone did those things, that would be being excessively homer-ish. But the reality is that very few - if any - broadcasters, even the most "homerish," do those things.

Most employed-to-cover-one-team broadcasters I've ever heard - T-Mac, of course, excluded - clearly have a rooting interest in that team. But that is as it should be. So when does being a "homer" become a problem? IF a broadcaster always downplayed anything the opposing team did, always called it a bad call when an umpire made a call in favor of the opposition, etc., THAT would be excessive. But just clearly rooting for the guys you are paid to follow? Hell, I don't find that offensive; I EXPECT that.

I hate that criticism of broadcasters. It's such a lazy, no-thought, knee-jerk way of saying "I don't like this guy, but I am not smart enough to explain why."

What makes a local broadcaster good is not how disinterested in the outcome he can appear to be (sorry T-Mac). What makes him good is partly fairness - which is not the same as disinterest - but is also communicating a sense of the moment, bringing it out instead of interfering with it. T-Mac and Wheels all too often interfere with the moment. Franzke and Andersen let the moment dictate their pace, but in so doing also draw out the full drama of the moment.

That's the difference.

1) Chicago White Sox—Ken "Hawk" Harrelson and Steve Stone

Hawk is an unbearable homer, and at very, very least he doesn't hide it. When the Sox score a run, it's "1-0 good guys!" In the midst of a play, rooting for a positive White Sox outcome, he'll yell, "Stretch! Stretch! Get over his head!" And when a player doesn't let him down, he'll give him an "atta boy." Listening to Hawk is just an immensely grating experience (we'll leave Steve Stone out of this), and it is only compounded by his attempts at folksiness. In an interleague series, the Nationals are the "Nasty Nats." A pitch on the handle of the bat is "jam city." And when a player strikes out, "he gone!" Let's just say Hawk's mouth might be put to better use as the tail end of a human centipede.

Harrelson is the one guy I would think might be guilty of excessive homerness. But I don' think the problem is so much his homerness as it is his cornball antics - regardless of which team he is rooting for. He's like that guy who thinks he is hilarious and charming, but is really just an ass.

In other words, he can openly root for the White Sox, and that's fine, but can he do it without orchestrated nonsense like "You can PUT IT ON THE BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRDDDDDDDDD - YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I was happy to see Thom Brenneman and Brantley as No. 2, although they are infinitely worse than the White Sox.

Thom Brennenman is one of the few PBPers who I think is objectively as bad as TMac. Incredible facepunchable smug coming from that guy.

I was watching some of the replay of the Boise-OU Fiesta Bowl the other day, basically one of the most exciting/compelling sporting events of the past decade, and during OT after Boise scores a potentially tying TD (setting up Statue of Liberty) on a halfback pass of a 4th down (ie, incredible play), instead of making the call and letting the crowd go nuts during the moment, he decides THIS is the time to break into his argument for a playoff system for a good 30 seconds. The color guy to his credit basically wasn't even listening to him and replied "Yeah, what an incredible playcall there!!"

My sister's husband apparently liked Tom McCarthy - until he saw him in a Wawa one day. McCarthy was apparently fulfilling the role of "nouveau riche douche" to a T, Ray-Bans and all.

I like the Rangers PBP guy on TV. For some reason, I find myself watching alot of their games on EI.

Ron Darling is great at his job.

Tom MacCarthy, Phillies Broadcaster, was found stabbed to death at a local Wawa yesterday. Witnesses say the clerk lept over the counter wielding a ballpoint pen but Police declined to comment until after their official investigation.

Not to defend Hawk Harrelson's overall homerish performance, but I think the "You can put it on the boooooooooard" call is great. Few others in the game have such a strong signature call.

I don't really even mind that one so much, but it's the only one of his stock calls and things that he does that I knew off hand. I know he does lots of bizarre things, many much worse than that. And ChiSox fans that I've met love that "put it on the board" call. Really, even I kind of like it.
