i know that they're a well run organization, and it'd be great if we had one of them in philly, but it seems like they just hand a briefcase full of cash to any veteran free agent that wants a one year, make-good deal.

i know it's hard to believe, but there are places other than boston where a guy like mark kotsay or takashi saito or john smoltz can go. and they'd probably have a lot bigger impact, and be much more well liked if they'd give a team like cincinatti or tampa or minnesota, where there's a chance for a playoff appearance, and there are loads of young pitchers who would out smoltz's hand just to get close to a player that was as great as he's been.

I don't think Atlanta's core is good enough for this to matter. This is kind of like the Phillies forfeiting draft picks 5-6 years ago in the middle of the Braves window. This is our window and the Braves are forfeiting their picks. I'm much happier with Lowe in Atlanta than New York.

Considering that the Dodgers owed him $22.1MM ($15MM in salary and $7.1MM from his signing bonus) I find that hard to believe.

So they're still liable for the full amount.

Frank McCourt did confirm . . . that team officials did discuss the possibility of trying to void the contract sometime last season -- he wouldn't say when, but it was obvious he was talking about mid-summer -- but that the decision was made not to proceed. McCourt denied that the decision not to proceed was based on the fact the club would have stood very little chance of emerging victorious in such a matter against the all-powerful players' union.
