An all powerful players union? Damn, JC Romero wishes he was in one of those. His situation is just screaming for unionization.

Considering that the Dodgers owed him $22.1MM ($15MM in salary and $7.1MM from his signing bonus) I find that hard to believe.

Only caught the tail end of the report on ESPN

Their web site says the 22.1M will be spread out over six years, so maybe that's the agreement they came to.

Why are the Cubs even bothering with him?

Markakis is getting close to signing a 6/64-66 extension. Looks like a pretty good deal for both sides, but I'm kind of shocked that he's willing to stay in Baltimore for that long. That's an impossibly tough uphill battle.

he'd be in arbitration for the next three years anyway. it's as much a deal to get him guaranteed money for the next three years as it is for the O's to lock him up.

O's are getting better. Some elite young talent. But a brutal division.

Well yea, but it's those additional three years that I'm kind of surprised about. I'd think just about everyone in Baltimore that's decent would be looking to jump ship asap.

i'm just saying, it's pretty much the same idea as Hamels signing a weak three-year deal. Markakis will get paid in six years. and he'll be 30 years old, ready to strike gold on an eight-year deal.

I get you, I just can't believe anyone would give up free agent years to stay in Baltimore. Especially someone like Markakis who projects really well for continued improvement. It's different from Cole because of those free agent years and the much greater risk of injury for a pitcher. Plus, WFC.
