Pedro Feliz walks

Postby philliesphhan » Thu Apr 17, 2008 23:05:22

There must be some divine intervention because when I went to copy Pedro's latest walk onto my computer, the DVD started up with Pedro in the 5th inning with the count 3-0.

I never used the DVD before

Yea, but they tried to sign Soriano for 120M too and traded for an injured Garcia and signed Gordon and signed Eaton and signed Helms, Nunez, traded Abreu/Lidle for slop, tried to dump Burrell etc. My trust level is low with the Phillies & Gillick. Lowell certainly would have been an upgrade and Gillick went to ownership and convinced them to give him more $$ to offer. Where was that creativity to help the pitching? Why did we settle for Feliz?

If Feliz wins a gold glove and hits beyond his career levels, then perhaps it turns out to be great, but somehow I doubt either of those will happen.

His defense so far has been ok and his offense is close to his usual performance. I guess I am sick of the Bell, Helms, Nunez, Feliz-type 3B and want to get someone better.

I'm not sure what any of those things have to do with Pedro Feliz. My argument has nothing to do with Pat Gillick and Ruben Amaro or whether they should have used the Feliz money to sign Loshe or whatever. The question posed is: (1) whether Feliz sucks; and (2) whether he is going to be worth what he is going to be paid.

By the way, if Feliz hits beyond his career levels (let's say above 100 OPS+) and wins a gold glove, it would be an absolute freaking steal of a deal. If he hits around his career average and plays very good 3B, its more than worth the money he is being paid and a clear upgrade over Dobbs (who had a whopping OPS+ of 96 in this breakout year and cant play 3B) and Helms.

It is called a trend or pattern of how a GM pays players....Feliz is another in a long line: Bell, Perez, Nunez, Dobbs, Helms...of mediocre 3B.

His career avg OPS+ is 84 with the last 3 seasons at 81, 79 and 85 and an career OBP of .288. Sorry, but that is below my expectations regardless of how good he is defensively. Being an upgrade on Dobbs or Helms is hardly a ringing endorsement.

His OPS+ so far this year is 70. Great.

Two walks today. The end is at hand.

Pretty incredible. Last year Feliz had 27 unintentional walks in 590 PA's. This season, he has 6 BB in 65 PA. Last year he had 9 walks at the end of May. Incredible.

Why did your store get shut down?

Was it because of the Phillies hat? Or Petey's face/likeness (or whatever you call it)?

Damn, I wanted a t-shirt, too.

Not only is Pete walking at an unheard of pace for him, but his strikeout rate is the lowest of his career. He normally strikes out once every six plate appearances. Now he's at once every 8.9. The problem is that his BABIP is .189. He's always been between .253 and .295. Not great, but not .189. If his BABIP was in his usual range he'd have an OPS over .770. Is this bad luck? Too small a sample?

Youtube account now has walks 5 and 6, but also something I noticed on ESPN.com

Not only is his career best only .305 but it took a .276 batting average to get it. Could be a good sign that he's managed a .300+ OBP while only hitting .232
