LA said after his last walk "As a pitcher, you have to really have to be doing something to walk Pedro Feliz... or not doing something."
Fine. You wanna act like you're two? I'll act like I'm one.

From today's Daily News
The Phillies have had trouble driving in runs recently, and never was that more evident than in the second and fourth innings 2 nights ago, when Geoff Jenkins led off with doubles only to finish stranded on base each time. In both situations, Pedro Feliz made an infield out following Jenkins' extra-base hit. Feliz entered last night hitting just .167 with runners in scoring position this season.
Charlie Manuel said yesterday that when Feliz struggles, it is sometimes because he is not aggressive enough at the plate.
"When he loads up and he gets a good swing at the ball, he moves it," the manager said. "Sometimes he kind of feels for the ball. He gets defensive instead of offensive."

In fairness to Manuel, I don't think he means he should never walk. I think he means he should stop taking such shitty swings.

context, wasrzy, context. Manuel's quote is in the context of an individual swing, not about taking pitches....

And, even still, I'm inclinded to give Manuel leeway when it comes to All Things Hitting.

Philliesphhan nailed this one I think.

Being aggressive at the plate is not the same thing as not taking walks when they're offered. Burrell, for example, seems to me to be more aggressive this year than he has been at times in the past. He's still walking a ton. But he has been a little passive in regards to mashing good pitches in previous seasons sometimes (not always and not for a full season or anything).

Feliz is just a really bad hitter. He doesn't recognize good pitches to hit and lets them go. And he swings at slop he just can not drive. You can see he has some talent as he really drives mistakes when he does swing at them. But he's pretty much clueless up there.

Depending on how you define clutch hitting gives you different answers to the question regarding whether someone is a clutch hitter or not. And often clutchiness varies from year to year. But using the clutch hitting stats from billjamesonline, Feliz has been remarkably and consistently very good at it. His numbers over his career are .289/.330/.469, dwarfing (or is that dwarving?) his normal performance numbers. Perhaps that's what Manuel is getting at. Feliz is never going to walk much. He is not capable of it in my view. So he might as well be aggressive in the sense Charlie is talking about.

I think Saberheads like us see the word aggressive in regards to hitting and immediately think "BAD" because it means taking fewer walks. That isn't what Manuel menas in this case. Aggressive isn't always a bad thing in regards to hitting and being aggressive can result in more walks if you force pitchers to try to nibble because of it (I think Burrell is outstanding in this regard and so is Howard when he's hitting). Golson is supposed to be more aggressive this year and it's helped him a bunch and even increased his walk rate.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

Feliz has taken a lot of good pitches throughout his career. He is, however, striking out once every 10.9 PAs this year, compared to once every 6.1 in his career. That's a big drop. Unfortunately, his walks are now almost at his career average. After drawing 7 walks in his first 20 games, he's had 2 in his last 27.

.768 in May though. He is, in fact, Mr. May -- .788 career OPS in the flowery month. So we are seeing the best of Feliz right now. Enjoy, enjoy!

Part of that is because his BABIP is much lower than it normally is. After the two hits tonight he's up to .716.
