.768 in May though. He is, in fact, Mr. May -- .788 career OPS in the flowery month. So we are seeing the best of Feliz right now. Enjoy, enjoy!

May OPS at a sicknasty .861 now (.306/.333/.528).

He's a Phillie now, so we might as well root for him.

I still say this guy would have been fine in last year's lineup (ie, the real problem is gentlemen like Howard and Victorino and Jenkins and Rollins doing little to this point).

I really expected a bit more of this would have settled in by now. His production numbers and defense have been more than adequate, and I'm sure it's statistically unlikely for a player at his point in his career to dramatically increase his walk rate, so why wring hands over this?

Last year, an awful lot of playing time at third went to Nunez and a very unproductive Wes Helms. Now, we've got a guy at third who Charlie can play the whole game, saving one or more moves a night, and will give us a bit above average home run and rbi totals with good defense.

Considering, Feliz isn't being called upon to bat in the top half of the lineup, I just don't see the problem.

I agree with Buddy. Based on projections coming into this season, it looked like Feliz would be about a 1 to 1.5 win upgrade over Nunez/Helms/Dobbs (when taking into account both offense and defense). That seems about right. And having Dobbs almost always available as the #1 LH PH off the bench has already proven to be a major plus. If they'd locked into too many years at too high a salary as Wade did with Bell I'd be more critical. But given Feliz' strong points (defense, power) and the fact that he's only costing $3MM, it seems like the best available option.

I think that's the key. When they didn't get Lowell, who was left to play 3B? Helms/Dobbs was an idea but they together were below par offensively and defensively last year (Dobbs numbers were much better as a PHer -- he didn't hit well in the 3B platoon).

Some folks thought Morgan Ensberg was a better choice. Maybe. But he's not as good defensively as Feliz and he has a 45 OPS + right now in New York. He very well could be this year's Trot Nixon.

There are some young guys around maybe that we don't know that much about who might be there for the taking. I found one when reading this year's BP annual but I can't remember who it was. Regardless, that's not the Phillies way.

The Phils plug holes with vets who they think will give them certain things based on their track record. In the case of Feliz, he's been incredibly consistent. Not really GOOD -- but he does the same thing every year. He hits some home runs and doubles, plays great defense and makes tons of outs. He's pretty much doing exactly that right now. It's not great, but it's a bit better than what they had last year at 3B.

Getting Lowell would have been ideal. Supposedly they offered him a bunch of money and it was a close thing. But he stuck with the Sox. That didn't leave a lot of great choices.

A really, really smart team would have spotted some guy buried in another organization and given him a chance. A really, really smart team would be right about the guy and he'd be a solution.

The Phillies aren't a really, really smart team. They occasionally strike gold with a Werth or a Dobbs but those guys were signed as spare parts. The Phils don't solve big problems that way. They get them a vet who they pretty much know what they'll get out of him.

Since they aren't really, really smart, they could have gone with a relatively unknown guy from another organization who possibly could be good but maybe not -- a Marte or a Betamit or someone like that. But they don't really do that.

Lowell was probably the best solution. When he didn't sign with our heroes they went with a known solution and a small but pretty certain upgrade. And that was Mr. May -- our very own Pete Happy.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

Is Lopes pointing Feliz to first base?
