Raise your hand if you thought HP would have 4 times as many walks as J-Roll on April 13th.

I don't like Feliz, but the reflexive dislike so far has been pretty stupid.

He's been decent defensively, unlike everyone else in the infield. And his 4 BB is 5th on the team and only two fewer than Utley.

He's not good, but he's not awful.

Maybe we should have a Ruiz-Rollins-Brunto-meter for their combined 3 BB in 100+ PA

Prior to 2008, Feliz had 3027 PA's and had drawn 138 non-intentional walks. Thats a 4.6% BB rate. This season, he has 49 plate appearances and 4 non-intentional walks, an 8.2% rate. I expect a regression to the mean. And his mean is complete suckitude at the plate. If he continues to catch the ball, I won't complain too much. But he's still not a good baseball player.

Are you discounting that there could be any potential "Charlie effect"??

There could be some effect. But not a doubling of his walk rate.

It's not like the number he is doubling is that large.

Last year Barajas went from 4.8% to 14.4%, Dobbs went from 4.2% to 8.1%, Werth went from 10.5% to 15.9%, and Helms went from 7.5% to 6.2%. Barajas' jump was 198%, Dobbs 93%, and Werth 50%. Helms had a 17% drop. A 78% gain by Feliz wouldn't be unusual for a new player. While it's a small sample size, 75% of the new players showed an increase. The four of them together averaged a 54% increase. In the walks I've seen he's looked very patient. Of course the pop out to left in the third was a first pitch swing.

The evidence on the Charlie factor isn't conclusive, but it is suggestive.
