PHILLIES GOT BRAD LIDGE!!!!!

Postby SideshowBob » Wed Nov 07, 2007 23:52:38

I think I like it.

I'm not very high on Bourn. Geary is nice, but fungible -- I'd like to have seen him in the pen next year, but you never know what he'd be like. Costanza is the question mark, but he wasn't so good as to make we worry too much about losing him. Bruntlett is worthless, but someone has to be the backup middle infielder -- I hope he's cheap at least and won't result in us paying over a million for a Nunez type guy.

The most important thing is that getting Lidge puts Myers back in the rotation. As long as that happens, I think this trade is good. I don't think you could have traded the same package to get a starter as potentially good as Myers and I think Lidge versus Myers as closer is a wash.

What is Lidge's contract status?

Sorry, this trade sucks.

We'll probably get a 1st rounder and a sandwich pick if he leaves, and the way the team is set up we should be trying to win now anyway. I guess if you are really high on Bourn or Costanzo you might not like this, but it's hard to say it sucks.

damn you and your reality!!!

That makes it seem like he's expected back and healthy, but I still want to see the Phils conduct a thorough physical before finalizing this deal.

Official statement from Wade:

"One of our goals coming into the offseason was to find a quality speed centerfielder who could hit at the top of the order and give us a spark. Bourn is an outstanding young player who will make an immediate impact and should be productive for a long time. Plus, his addition allows us to move Hunter Pence to right field, where he will continue to grow into the All-Star caliber player that we know he's capable of becoming.

"While Bourn was the key to the deal for us, we also believe that Geoff Geary will do a solid job in our bullpen, and Mike Costanzo is an outstanding power prospect at third base.

"Brad Lidge and Eric Bruntlett have been outstanding members of the Astros' organization. We weren't anxious to trade either player, but this deal makes sense for both the Astros and the Phillies."

If Lidge goes out and saves a bunch of games in 2008, he's likely to be a Type A and that's fine. Or the Phillies could extend him.

Drugs Delaney wrote:Initial reaction is that I like it. Lidge was a pretty solid pitcher in 2007 after a brutal 2006. 88 strikeouts in 66 innings confirms he still has stuff. And it moves Myers back into the rotation which is the best thing about it.

I posted this on the other board, but what I find interesting about Lidge is that his peripherals - K/9 and K/BB anyway - were almost identical in '05 versus '07 (his K/9 both years was over 11, so very good). The biggest difference in his performance was hits allowed. I don't know if the fact this number dropped for him in '07 is a good sign or a bad sign, because I haven't lookd at his BAA for '06 vs. '07 yet, but my guess is the "real" Lidge is much closer to the '07 version than the '06.

So, for a 25 year old light-hit outfielder, an essentially replacement level reliever, and a third base "prospect" who is likely a marginal major leaguer at best, this is a good deal.

Wade in Houston is paying dividends for the Phillies already.

So basically, Bourn fulfills the Ed Wade Juan Pierre fetish role...

I just hope, for his sake, that Wade realizes he needs to lock Bourn up long term with a back-loaded Juan Pierre contract to secure the Astros' future.

A lot of people were skeptical about the Garcia trade, actually. I knod of liked it, to be honest, but I porbably wouldn't trade Gio Gonzalez (let alone him plus Gavin Floyd) for what we just gave up for Lidge.

Yes. He's the guy I've wanted in the OF all along. I think a Jenkins/Werth platoon would do quite well in RF.
