PHILLIES ACQUIRE IGUCHI (For Dubee)

Postby FTN » Fri Aug 17, 2007 14:06:38

Anthony (philly): Can Iguchi play 3rd once Utley returns? He has to be better then the Helms/Nunez/Dobbs combo.

SportsNation Jayson Stark: (1:05 PM ET ) I have no doubt they're going to try this. But he's played there one day in his life, so there's no way of knowing. I had one GM tell me, though, he thinks Iguchi is such a sound player, he has no doubt the guy can -- and should -- play third when Utley comes back. At that point, I think the Phillies would set a record for most third baseman on one team. FIVE of them? Amazing.

I caught a couple minutes of 950 radio yesterday, and apparently Amaro had just been on saying there were no plans to give Iguchi practice at third before Utley came back, that the transition would be difficult and that they didn't know whether Iguchi would even want to make a switch (which I presume means they haven't even talked to him about it).

Coste was a 3Bman at SWB and other places too. They should play all of their 3Bman one or two innings in a game after they clinch the division. One of those Cesar Tovar/Bert Campanaris type stunts.

Par for the course from an organization that specializes in incompetency.

Dubee has 4 appearances, 2 starts. 13 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 2 HR, 4 BB, 14 K. He's still in Low A, not even worth worrying about him at this point.

The growing sentiment in the local medias to move Gooch to 3B is inversely proportionate to his production

well let's look at our options
Helms career OPS+ 98
Nunez career OPS+ 64
Dobbs career OPS+ 90
Iguchi career OPS+ 98

Nunez clearly should be used only as a defensive replacement. Dobbs only has 489 career PA. Neither Dobbs nor Helms are any good defensively. Iguchi and Helms are similiar in their overall career numbers aside from one major difference. Iguchi is an everyday player. Helms isn't.

However, since Dobbs has hit well enough this year, I wouldn't mind a Dobbs vs righties, Iguchi vs Lefties platoon at third.

I forgot Branyon but I don't think they had any intention of starting him.

The Mets have stretched their lead to five games in the NL East, so the Phillies have to hope that the return of Chase Utley will give them a boost. The boost might actually come from moving Tadahito Iguchi over to third base, an idea that the Phillies seem to be struggling with. One source told me that the Phillies front office had discussions about sending Iguchi down to the minors to test him at third, rather than doing it at the major-league level. That's not going to happen, but assuming Utley can return to a productive level, having both in the lineup should be a boost. I just don't think that, given Utley's injury, and the type of production reduction we normally see from hand and wrist injuries, that it will be enough to get them back in the race, especially given their pitching problems.

one problem with that...

iguchi vs. RHP: .349/.423/.772 career, .347/.396/.743 2007
iguchi vs. LHP: .342/.413/.755 career, .340/.391/.731 2007
