Literal LOL moment from Dave Barry's 2019 Year In Review:

Tesla CEO Elon Musk introduces an all-electric “Cybertruck” featuring sophisticated technology and a striking resemblance to a doorstop. The best feature, Musk notes, is that “when you’re sitting inside it, you can’t see it.”

If you occasionally pull a trailer and get confounded backing up, and you have back-up camera in your vehicle, check these out.

Model Y deliveries started this weekend!

It's really really sharp. Much more storage space than I had feared (thought it was be super tiny).

My Tesla fund is fully funded. Upon seeing the videos this weekend I would've plunked my money down, but at this point I've got to make sure I'm still employed by the end of the year :(

How comparable do you think the new Ford is to the Model Y?

i guess it depends what you're after. the ford has some advantages for some: it has more 'real' controls instead of everything done through the display (i kinda like that to be honest); it has a more aggressive style (which seems to increase drag and thus decrease range); it will have the $7500 tax credit for the foreseeable future.

The tesla has better range for the buck at all price points (like 20-25%); faster charging potential at superchargers (but realistically 97% of charging will be done at home where both will max out to a residential 220v/50A connection, so the supercharging only matters on long journeys); the tesla is quicker 0-60 at all trims (doesn't matter one lick to me); their software ecosystem, with OTA updates, is revolutionairty in the industry, and i haven't heard ford even trying anything like that); and tesla almost certainly has a huge huge lead if autonomy is on your wish list.

I hope the mach-e is wildly successful. there's a large untapped ev market- those turned off by the cult of tesla and loyal to the motorhead brands of their ancestors. the mach-e should fill that niche nicely and thus help tesla's mission of accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy.

Thanks. I'm not in the market for either. Just curious if there's finally a "competitor". Not that I think the mach-e will really compete for Tesla buyers. I think mach-e success or failure indicates if consumers are open to the transition now.

Anyone have experience with a Mazda 3 hatch? I was thinking about that as a college kid car and hoping that it had enough capacity to haul most of his dorm stuff. I figure we could ship clothing or something. 2 real questions: 1) any engine issues; 2) how roomy is it in actual use?

I drove one about 6 years ago but ended up buying a Hyundai Elantra GT instead. Nothing wrong with the Mazda just a better deal on the Hyundai.

I think anything in that segment is big enough for most dorm moves.

tesla is to electric cars as to apple and the smart phone.

it's going to take a while for some of these companies to catch up. some won't cut it either. of all the great success palm had with it's pda, couldn't make it in the smart phone market.

i like the looks of the mach-e better than the y and it has good specs. but worry about the tech, build, support...

imo, electric vehicles are the wave of the future and will replace CE cars. my bet is volkswagon becoming the "samsung" competitor to tesla down the road.

thought long, hard and serious about purchasing a bolt, there were some great deals. just didn't feel confident in it. got a great deal and picked up an 18 prius instead to put some serious miles on until i take delivery on the cybertruck.

currently cramming three kids under five in the back of a sedan. completely unsustainable. we're holding out for an electric, or at worst an ev plug-in hybrid dealy.
frustrating to see the cool options not in this country.
i like to pretend it will be a model y but will prob end up with like a pacifica

we're gonna get a Subaru Forester. I'm holding onto my TDI till an electric vehicle thats affordable hits this country. I'm hoping that the VW electric vehicles are as good as they seem to be. Think they roll out to US next year(corona will probably delay that).

has to have real range and be under 30k. i have hope that the new VW will be under 30. The Chevy Bolt seems pretty good, actually. but i'm not buying an american electric car.

We're watching the decent Psycho prequel "Bates Motel" with Vera Farmiga and Freddie Hightower as Norman Bates.

What fascinates me is the soundtrack - clearly chosen by a boomer with eclectic tastes - and the presence of 70s vintage cars and trucks, all featuring the sorely-missed triangle vent windows -even though the show is set in 2015 or so.

Vera drives a '72 Mercedes diesel that looks very sharp in 2020.

The show is corny but mostly fun overall.

Edit: was reading this and thought this was the TV thread. So to stay more on topic, yes I enjoy some of the old cars on there as well.
