At first I was like wtf? Took about 5 minutes to grow in me. Versatile, utilitarian and apocalyptic. Real good price point on it for its capabilities. I like the rivian but this mad max thing plays up well here in the desert. Hopefully will come in some earthy tone colors tho.

Cybertruck > rivian

That’s of course without either being on the road yet.

So is this a buying opportunity for Tesla stock? I do think the market is probably over-reacting to the truck's unconventional design. How many does Tesla expect to sell though? And the price may pull people who are not truck buyers, but simply like the idea of an electric vehicle. But, tesla stock was probably over priced anyway though, as it is not (yet) a profitable company, so maybe the drop this morning is simply a correction.

Not yet, IMO.

I bought in September for ~$225. It dropped 25 bucks to $333. Seems to be holding. The run-up was due to the Q3 profitability announcement with seemingly only a little at the tail end in anticipation of the pickup, so I think we should settle in about here. Probably won't have another big downfall until April if Q1 doesn't show a profit. Seems fairly certain that Q4 will be a profit. But who knows, if Giga3 starts shipping in volume in Q1 there could be a profit there too, as there's a lot of latent demand in APJ. So this may be the lowest it will ever be.

So far, electric cars have looked pretty much like internal combustion cars. But the general layout of the internal combustion car evolved to accommodate internal combustion engines. Electric cars present a great deal more flexibility in how the power train is laid out. I think we are going to be seeing a lot more innovative designs going forward. In the case of the Cyber Truck, it's evident in the very short front hood.

Curious though--no side mirrors--are they using cameras instead?

yeah, definitely going to see some creative designs and i think a lot of third party builders joining the field as i think the powertrain will be what rivian calls "the skate" and you plop your chassis on and revise and modify things like the suspension.

i think refurbished electrical cars wills be the wave of the future in 25 years as the motor/drivetrain will be good for 500,000 miles or as musk has said a million.

There is already talk / rumors that Tesla may supply their "rollerskate" to traditional brands to allow them to electrify their fleet more quickly. I don't see it happening, though. Unless Toyota or GM or someone fully funded a new gigafactory.

If the Mach E were actually an electric Mustang, rather than another boring SUV, I'd be tempted. I'm actually pretty excited though--I'll be in the car market in about 4 years when Lil' Vulture graduates....

There's no way that Musk didn't know that the glass was going to break, right? It was just a stunt to get people talking, right?

To the truck itself, I'm not a truck guy but I've been thinking about getting one anyway. The Mazda5 my wife drives is ten years old now and my Prius is only a year newer, and neither one is any good in the snow, and we live in a hilly area. Plus we have a number of home improvement projects we'd like to undertake and having a vehicle that can carry larger items would be handy at times. My wife works close to home so her miles driven isn't all that high most of the time so the decrease in gas mileage wouldn't hurt too much (especially as the Mazda5's mileage is pretty shitty considering it's relatively small size and engine). So I was thinking a relatively late model used Tacoma but the prices are outrageous. The entry-level Tesla truck is only like $15K more than a reasonable used Tacoma. Not sure it would fit in my garage though...

i don't think so. that would be very un elon-like.

and following on that discussion on how easy it seemingly is to add a different body to a skateboard: i wouldn't be surprised if they have an alternate, more traditional body ready to go. the shape of this thing getting people's attention is more elon's style.

The style is purposely edgy of course, so they might have an alterative that's toned down, but the most radical styling cue, the sloping sides from the back of the cab to the rear of the bed, is probably driven by necessity. As this truck's bed is not decoupled from the cab as in a traditional pickup, that is needed to provide torsional stiffness to the whole structure. See also Chevy Avalanche and Honda Ridgeline for other (though less extreme) examples.
