There was a discussion about this on NPR's Science Friday some time ago. It was curious to me as the show interviewed a Robotic Ethicist about the various scenarios around self driving cars and the decision matrix that would be computed to see which vehicle survives a run away truck on a mountain side road where there is going to be a headon collision . Alternately they put a cliff in the scenario, which I remember because essentially one of the cars drives over the cliff for the great good. It is a rather complex line of logic as you put your life in the hands of AI.

BTW - IFLScience is a great site.

so whaddaya think you'll do? Sell the car back? Take the cash? If you take the cash, I'm guessing you're then obligated to take the fix (possibly they won't give you the $ until the fix is in place), thus lowering your MPG??

You get the cash regardless of whether or not you sell it back. What a deal.

yeah. so looks like i might get 10k in cash. then i have the option to keep the car and eventually get a fix(which they have no fix for yet) or sell it back for price it was in August 2015(guessing very good condition KBB price?)

they've already given me 1k(500 we're sorry money and 500 dealer maintenance).

if they give me a good price on a new VW and it only costs a little money to upgrade to a 2017 i'll probably take it. get out from under whatever baggage may come with the TDI and get a new gas car. they get mid 30's on the HWY(i do 70m round trip daily almost all HWY). average 40mph currently. i'd take a small hit on the gas economy but thats a tiny hit.

big decisions ahead!

http://www.cand.uscourts.gov/crb/vwmdl/ ... settlement

The Owner Restitution payment is calculated at 20% of the Vehicle Value plus $2,986.73. The minimum Owner Restitution payment for any Class Member—to be paid on top of the Vehicle Value—will be $5,100. Some Class Members may receive as much as approximately $10,000 in Owner Restitution.

my current restitution is 5851.73. but thats based on what my car is worth now. i don't know what NADA value for my car was in August 2015

i know there is another TDI user in here. This is pretty helpful!

https://www.reddit.com/r/tdi/comments/4 ... t_summary/

looks like about 6k cash or if they buy the car back it'd be 23k(including the 6k).

also might be a good time to buy a used VW on the cheap. The dealers are going to be flooded with used cars I would think.

I am very curious to see what happens. 2013 Passat purchased 2 years ago September. Value is base on a 2 year old car (Sept 2015 - whatever that was), then the payout. I am guessing the payout is ~7K. So I should clear the 0 interest loan and have plenty to spare. Might look at a Rav-4 Hybrid.

How do I obtain a historical value from a previous month or year?

NADAguides has an extensive Reference Library and offers its services to anyone in need of outdated information on automobiles, boats, motorcycles, manufactured homes, and much more. Values may be obtained for a prepaid fee of $40.00 per value. If the information you are requesting is available, requests will be processed within two (2) business days and may be emailed, faxed or mailed. If you are interested in this service please email information@NADAguides.com

you can follow along to the charts to find out.

https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/docume ... _table.pdf

find your car and thats basically what you'll get for a buy back or just restitution.

Thanks. I grabbed the website earlier, but have not had much time to deal with it. The ballpark is ~$30 total. That puts us in a place to have $20K "free money" to spend after the loan is dispensed with. I just might buy my next car in cash.

you're not reading it right still. its either Column 1 or Column 2. don't add them up.

for reference my
'13 Golf with 55k miles on it thats fully loaded
has a base buyback of 21,377
has the audio(+330), navigation(+660), power sunroof(+600) and automatic trans(+780)
to put my buyback total at 23747. I have gone OVER their miles calculations so i take a deduction of 420 dollars for that. That leaves me at 23, 327$ that they'll give me for my car. Thats about what i paid for it a few years ago. I have 12.7k left in debt on the car. by the time this rolls out i'll have around 11.5k in debt. that should leave me with about 12k for a downpayment on a new car.

That price of 23, 327 INCLUDES the restitution(which is just column 2). So if i take the fix i'll get column 2's math(which is around 6300$) and then i have to get the fix at some determined time and deal with whatever the fall out is.

If you get the fix they're adding on a 4/48k warranty to the car. appears to cover drive train, engine and exhaust.

Hyundais are real nice now. I have a 2011 Sonata 2.0T and kind of want a new one. Only 63k miles though so it would be pointless.

I've had problems with it for sure...at least 4 recalls, new transmission harness, trans fluid temp sensor, completely new turbo. Fortunately all were under warranty or the dealer was able to petition Hyundai to cover it for me if the warranty just ran out and with my service history. So far I've paid for brakes, a battery, tires, and a couple of bulbs here and there.
