Long time fan of Hondas - got my intro with a 1980 Civic that cost about $5k new (the base model was $3699). Also owned an 84 Prelude (just a wonderful car) and a 91 Legend.
It once puzzled me that I got a consistent 40-45 mpg out of that hatchback, driving it like I stole it, and today's econoboxes get only 30-35 mpg even with 35 years of technical advances. But I suppose that the cars are heavier and safer with a lot more steel and features that protect the passengers - so that's a good tradeoff.
