Forcing all those wealthy people to spend THEIR money for private educations and using THEIR tax dollars to fund public ones... it is the worst sort of discrimination.

Technically, the first one never ended. There was no peace treaty or surrender. The revival might represent a US-China proxy this time. Who knows with this administration though.

Considering there was an armistice in 1918 and the Treaty of Versailles signed in 1919 it’s a bit misleading to say the Great War never “technically” ended. I would argue that it did end “technically” but many of the underlying issues were either not adequately addressed or addressed in such a punitive manner as to insure a Second World War 20 years later.

Pretty sure he meant the Korean War

Every base named after confederate rebel scum should be renamed, every statue melted down. Why is there even a discussion about this? If we can't even agree on something so simple we are in big trouble

Looks like he figured out the Big Mac secret sauce recipe.

Serious question: does England have places named after American founding fathers?
Fine. You wanna act like you're two? I'll act like I'm one.

none that i can glean, but it's probably a trick question of sorts too- you'd be hard pressed to find a place in the UK with a name less than 250 years old.

all those statues and bases and tributes, were all done under the purpose of reconstruction. they should hold zero meaning now and should be taken down and renamed, but it did serve a very vital purpose at the time. this can not be stated enough. really have to be careful about removing other history through art and architecture tho. there's lessons to be learned, both good and bad.

it wasn't hugs and kisses after the civil war. there was occupation and resentment. didn't want to strip the south of all their dignity. you did that, probably fighting a guerrilla style war for the next 25+ years.

that's nonsense. only one of the bases in contention even existed in the 19th century. most were created in the 1940s

The Civil War ended 1865. The Reconstruction Era was from 1865 - 1877.

Camp Beauregard - 1917
Fort Benning - 1918
Fort Bragg - 1918
Fort Gordon - 1917
Fort A.P. Hill - 1941
Fort Hood - 1942
Fort Lee - 1917
Fort Pickett - 1942
Fort Polk - 1941
Fort Rucker - 1942

The monuments are too vast to go into detail, but many of them were built after reconstruction ended.

phatj linked a tweet series on fb last night which was pretty revealing (if true). 44 tweets explaining how the confederacy was actually all about white supremacy and all the monuments and symbolism was to indicate that this was still the attitude of the United States of America.

I'll see if I can find it.

still a ton of resentment towards the north not only during wwI with bragg being created but even close to 90 years later with many of these others for wwII. shit, there was still a ton of resentment from the south almost 100 years later. my dad was stationed down there in the late 60's, he was treated nicer in germany. it was appeasement at the time to make sure they were on your team. is what it is. times have changed and agree it's time to move on.
