Eh, minus the wind surfing, which is not an immaterial point in the days of faux-populist Trump. It does matter that he rode the train to work in the Senate for so many years.

While my gut tells me that we should eliminate the minimum wage, it is plenty low right now, and removing it would indeed open the door for some employers to exploit some labor markets.

I'd keep it where it is, but I'd do something at the federal government level that mirrors the EIC. For all persons over age 21, federal tax dollars will be used to get you to a net (indexed for inflation) wage of $15/hr.

This is in keeping with programs that, while far from perfect, are effective in helping needy Americans - public housing, Medicaid, food stamps. Help for those who need it, not a blanket program that brings in everybody.

I'd much rather target subsidies to those that truly need it rather than paying suburban teens an above-market rate for summer jobs, or, even worse, paying everybody including Bill Gates and Mike Bloomberg $1000 a month.

Why would any business pay anybody over $7.25 then, if the government is just gonna make up the rest anyway?

How about if you can't afford to pay your workers a living wage, commensurate with broader profitability and productivity trends in the U.S. over the last few decades, you go out of business?

Or are they *AM radio voice* entitled to it

That leaves unanswered the question of why it falls on employers to pay above-market wage rates. Why is the employer responsible but not the family, the schools, the community that failed to prepare this person for gainful employment?

More importantly, though, what it means is fewer stores and services in poor neighborhoods, more Dollar Stores and fewer bodegas, more Walmarts and fewer independent retailers. It's not very progressive to price small businesses out of business.

However, Stripes did catch the hole in my scheme, nobody would pay more than $7.25 if the government was just going to cover the difference.

The thing is, these are jobs that need to be done. Often, there's a mentality that the employer is doing the employee a favor by hiring him.

And it's not just people working in fast food--it's home health aids, child care workers, people who clean our offices. Some of these jobs are incredibly demanding.

They're all demanding. TPs screed is elitist garbage.

It really is crazy, if you think about the people you know that are 70+ and to think of them making high level decisions that impact the world just seems crazy. Trump will be 74 this year, Warren 71, Bernie 79, Biden 78, Bloomberg 78

Bernie/Biden/Bloomberg will be 80+ in the next 2 years.

Serious question...I realize it seems insensitive, but given the above, there's a non-zero chance of it happening. But, what happens if the winning candidate passes away between Election Day and Inauguration Day?

Rather than "balancing the ticket," it may be important to both parties to have a qualified potential successor in place...

Katy Tur tweeted "wait what?" In replying to a tweet about it. Don't think they told anyone. Wild.

Given his remarks over the last few weeks, it's hard to believe this is voluntary.

Not even sure. Said he talked with MSNBC, his decision to end it and this is the last night of Hardball. But then he wasn't on when it came back from commercial.

If people knew, not many did. Kornacki looked incredibly surprised.

It may because he hasn't officially "endorsed" yet, but Biden and Buttigieg people are tweeting "stand by for news" so maybe a VP announcement?

Oh and Beto is endorsing Joe Biden... which I guess isn't that newsworthy or unusual, but that's 3 former candidates for President in two days for Joe Biden

Ah there it is. Amy, Pete, and Beto all on stage together endorsing Joe Biden. What a weird world we live in.

Pretty massive 24 hours for the Biden campaign. Clearly their best stroke in the 6 or whatever months he's been doing this.

Biden would be wise to hire the best from all three of their campaign staffs. He desperately needs it.

I don't know how much Biden's early struggles were on his campaign vs. the man himself not coming out looking as strong as people would hope. That gave room for the campaigns of Klobuchar and Buttigieg to strike and for Bloomberg to try and buy an election. Though there are probably very good staff members on both campaigns. Pete's advisor Lis Smith seems to be well respected for the work she's done to make a mayor of South Bend such a hot commodity.

Ah well, all of the interest and appeal of the Democratic primaries has departed (or will be should/when Warren finally steps away). I've defended Biden the man previously, though he's clearly past his prime, and greatest fear of Bernie is simply his ineffectiveness, and I've certainly lived with the before. Bloomberg would be another reptile brain, but at least an informed reptile brain to replace the current occupant. So choose wisely Democrats, good luck and godspeed. I will try not to be as bitter this year following the slap in the face when I'm reminded once again the Party and not the people choose the candidate.
