Politics: What’s so Super about Tuesday?

I think it's important not to conflate two related, but distinct issues. One, the cost of college and second is the problem of college debt. One part of the solution I think that no one really talks about is that too few parents and 18 years have anything close to the understanding of the chaotic system of higher ed, and guidance counselors in most high schools are stretched far to thin to be of much help. Many students and parents tend to focus on name brands when those may not be the best fit. And unless the name brand is "Princeton" students really need to ask whether the expensive prestigious sound school is really a better deal than the nearby relatively affordable public school.

The rising cost of colleges stems from many factors, including declining state aid, the fact that technology costs money (on-line education, done well, does not save any money) students are perceived as needing more and more services, health care costs for employees, and on and on. Keep in mind also that financial aid itself is a cost, and merit aid can cost even more--giving away tons of scholarships can put a huge strain on university budgets. If name brand college is charging you full freight, part of your tuition dollars are subsidizing an athlete, or perhaps a student with the same financial circumstances as you, but with better SAT scores.

Student debt raises other issues. One big problem is that too often the student taking out the loan has no real idea what they're signing on to. Subsidized Federal Loans are in fact a good deal, as long as you graduate on time .because the government pays interest while you're in school But they typically don't come close to covering all the expenses. So, students borrow from other sources that are much less advantageous.

Some debt after graduating isn't terrible. 30k in student loans is basically a nice car. But unlike the car, there will be a return on your investment.

Two other issues can arise. First, graduate school, particularly law school, is how you'll sometimes see the eye watering 6 figure debt load. Second, some students are not only borrowing to pay tuition and room and board, but also for cars and things.

Suffice it to say there are some simple, probably politically popular things that the federal government could do--basically, increase the maximum Pell grant and make it easier for families to become eligible. (Currently, to qualify for a Pell grant you basically are low income.) In addition, increase the maximum amounts students can borrow with Subsidized Stafford loans.

How are you going to tell 18 year olds that their brains and bodies aren’t developed enough to buy alcohol or tobacco or go into a casino, but they’re able to sign on for hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt for the purchase of an intangible asset?

Because in our great country you’re never too young to start taking on debt a/k/a shifting wealth to the owner class.

Every once in a while when I see or hear that word I am transported back to my geeky Model UN days in high school. We participated in an annual regional gathering and some of the guys from other schools thought they were oh so clever when they passed written "proposals" to the pretty girl on our team asking her whether she would "like to hold a caucus in your mouth."

Back then I didn't think twice because I was young, dumb, and found most scatological humor funny. In retrospect, I feel bad for the young lady, who at least outwardly took these advances with good humor.

Bloomberg blamed the financial crisis on the end of redlining, according to the Associated Press. Comments were made in a forum at Georgetown in 2008.

"It all started back when there was a lot of pressure on banks to make loans to everyone," Bloomberg said at the time. "Redlining, if you remember, was the term where banks took whole neighborhoods and said, 'People in these neighborhoods are poor, they're not going to be able to pay off their mortgages, tell your salesmen don't go into those areas.'"

Bloomberg added that issues with people being unable to pay their mortgages began when "Congress got involved, local officials as well."

They "said, 'Oh that's not fair, these people should be able to get credit.' And once you started pushing in that direction, banks started making more and more loans where the credit of the person buying the house wasn't as good as you would like," Bloomberg said during the forum.

bloomberg is just another paper tiger of the dem establishments choice. first it was kamala, then it was biden, then it was buttigige but they know he can't win after NH so they're latching on to oligarch whos trying to buy the nomination to "stop bernie".

bloomberg might be getting the black vote now in the polls now but i guarantee once the stop and frisk + other racist shit he stands for starts to stick he'll plummet just like biden. (not to mention bernie has the highest ratings among all non white voters :^) )

JH is right when he says this race resembles the GOP primary in 2016 so much. and i always thought thats what it would take for bernie to get the nom.

Bloomberg cannot win a Democratic primary with things like donations to Pat Toomey and George W. Bush on his record.

If all four of these people insist on running through Super Tuesday, Bernie may have this thing locked up faster than I thought, not in delegate math but in narrative. Bernie looks well-positioned to win Nevada. He could still pull out South Carolina with Biden fading fast. The states voting on Super Tuesday (and my predictions with all of Klobuchar, Biden, Buttigieg, and Bloomberg in the race):

Alabama - Biden
Arkansas - Bernie
California - Bernie
Colorado - Bernie
Democrats Abroad - most definitely Bernie
Maine - Bernie
Massachusetts - Sorry Liz, but at this point, I think her campaign will be so sunk, if still active, this will go Bernie
Minnesota - Klobuchar
North Carolina - Bernie
Oklahoma - Biden
Tennessee - Bernie
Texas - Buttigieg
Utah - Buttigieg
Vermont - Bernie
Virginia - Buttigieg

It's not that Bernie should win all of these states, it's that with those 4 splitting the vote and Warren fading, Sanders will be able to pick up wins in states he shouldn't be competitive in.

Why are primaries/caucuses done in the order that they are? My state (NJ) is so late that it’s irrelevant and it’s also blue enough that there’s no question which party it’s going to go for. It’s a bit of a bummer to feel like you don’t have any input in the election.

Reading this list makes me wish that New Jersey had their primary before June. If they did, I might have a choice.
