Politics: Fine Politicians on Both Sides

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) defended President Trump’s critical remarks about Baltimore ahead of the president's scheduled remarks at the House GOP retreat on Thursday, arguing his visit signals he cares about the city

Nobody believes that. McCarthy certainly doesn't believe it. Everybody knows that Trump only cares about himself. Oh and like Scrooge McDuck "his" money. Oh and his daughter, because he's gross.

Disagree on Castro. He is coming off petty to me.

No. 1 Readers' Pick and Times Pick on NYT comments on debate:

Julian Castro, 34% of our nation's citizens are over 50. A Pew Research study found "Nearly Half of Democrats Say the Best Age for a President Is In Their 50s". Your personal attack on Vice President Biden–a cheap shot at his 'memory' competely changed my feeling about you.

Older Americans are simply tired of the callous comments about the elderly. In a society that has embraced movements that call for rights for gays, women, etc. where is the movement for respect for the elderly? And how does someone running for the highest office in this country think this was okay behavior?

Your behavior is no better than President Trump's–it was a bully move.

I am not a Biden supporter (I am undecided), but I have profound respect him and for his character (and your attack actually just pushed my support towards him). When will Dem candidates like you realize the reason so many people support him is because of the character he possesses? Cheap shots and stage tricks are not becoming to a candidate–for voters, it reads as if you are desperate to be noticed.

2nd:

Boy, I use to like Castro but I'm offended by his hostility and arrogance. His attacks at Biden are similar to those Harris made during the first debate. I hope Castro suffers as much as Harris has.

I mean 50 is different than 80. I don’t think it’s ageist when someone is markedly different than they used to be.

Frida Ghitis’ take on CNN online:

The first Democratic debate featuring all the top candidates is turning into a fine night for the front runner -- and for the Democratic Party.

It’s clear that former Vice President Joe Biden spent the break between debates training to become a much better debater. It shows. The new Biden beamed with optimism with his opening statement, quoting John F. Kennedy’s “I refuse to postpone,” as he launched an ambitious agenda for America. But the sunny disposition did not keep him from going aggressively against his challengers, questioning the cost of their proposals, particularly on health care.

Biden seemed sharp, alert and downright sprightly as he stood next to a hoarse Sen. Bernie Sanders, who some on social media thought might be fighting a cold.

And now tweets:

Soon as I write Biden is doing a good job he goes off the rails. Oy

Didn't watch because I am pretty sure I'm not going to watch any of these debates, but Castro took a big swing at Biden for being old/wrong, but Castro ended up being wrong and Biden was right? Great stuff.

Who needs to watch when I can just look at the box score?

CNN: winners Biden, O'Rourke, Harris' opening statement
losers Castro, Yang, Warren

BBC winners O'Rourke
losers "time will tell"

USA today winners O'rourke
losers Castro

Wash Post winners Warren Buttigieg
losers Castro Harris (sorta)

Congratulations to Beto since everything he has done position wise in this campaign on immigration and guns means no one will beg him to drop out and run vs. Cornyn anymore because he'd be a liability as a statewide candidate in Texas compared to a generic Democrat.

I was watching and did not understand what he was trying to nail him on. It was very strange.

Biggest money raising day of the quarter from him. He's made it pretty clear he's angling for a position in the WH.

I made good on my promise to watch the ballgame, but then caught the inevitable soundbites. Castro is clearly being positioned as leading that attack on Biden as a feeble old man. The only way that plays worse is if he did something similar to Sanders on camera. The media scream against Castro seems like the turn on Reubio when he tried to go low against the bottom dweller last cycle.

Biden's dentures fell out, he said black people weren't playing enough records for their kids, used conservative talking points, and he brought up his vote on the war in Iraq.

Castro was being kind.
