As my wife and I were packing we discovered that we had a total of seven (!) unused computers lying around the house. Six laptops including a netbook (remember those?) and a desktop I built myself several years ago. Two of them are relatively current: an HP ultrabook I got from my previous employer three-ish years ago that they never asked me to return, and a big ASUS laptop I bought for myself around the same time. However, each had issues. The ultrabook had a bitlocker which I couldn't figure out how to get around to install my own OS on it. The other I had upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 10 when the free upgrade was offered a couple years ago, but a subsequent Windows update had broken something and it went into a permanent boot loop. In the past I probably would have been able to get over both issues, but it would have taken me a lot of time and effort and required having another working computer to download things and possibly burn CDs or at least make a bootable flash drive. I lack the time and inclination these days and also my only working computers are a Chromebook (which has no optical drive of course) and an elderly Macbook Pro (which does, but every time I try to use the thing MacOS pisses me off).

So I decided to take them to a local shop (The Computer Fixer in Lansdale [they also have a location in Philly] -- I highly recommend them) to see what could be done. I brought along the desktop too since it had three hard drives in it with various files that I didn't want to lose but which I didn't have the equipment to get off myself. I also took the Windows 7 license I purchased back when I built the desktop so they could (hopefully) install Win7 on the ultrabook. And of course I was hoping they could get Windows 10 working on the other laptop without much hassle since I could not find the Windows 8 restore CD from when I bought it.

A few days later and under $300 spent, and I have two working laptops and all three hard drives from the desktop in external enclosures. In retrospect I should have just ordered the enclosures on Amazon or whatever and done the 15 minutes of work myself, but for the $90 total it cost I'm not too mad.

I'm now using the ultrabook and I have to say, after having lived with a Chromebook as my only home computer for a year and a half or so, I'm happy to have a Windows machine again. First, its significantly larger screen (14" vs 11", and 1080P vs 768P) and keyboard are perks, while as an ultrabook it's still relatively compact and lightweight. Second, the fact that it's a full desktop OS increases the flexibility, and even though I don't need that flexibility often, it's sure nice to have. Finally, I have a docking station for it (also from my previous employer) that happens to fit my current work laptop as well so I have a home office set up with multiple monitors that I can dock my own machine to if I ever need to do anything serious.

Meanwhile the kids are exited to inherit the other laptop and my Chromebook.

No. But you're not supposed to just throw old electronics in the trash and I hadn't ever gotten around to taking them somewhere for recycling.

I was listening to 5 Years by David Bowie while walking through a busy Zurich train station today. I mean, these people acted like they had no idea. I saw some people in an ice-cream parlour, drinking milk shakes cold and long. They were smiling and waving and looking so fine. We've got five years, that's all we've got, and it didn't seem to matter to any of them.

A Louisiana-based televangelist is asking his followers to donate money for a $54 million jet that can “go anywhere in the world in one stop,” The Times-Picayune reported.

Jesse Duplantis, 68, a Christian minister based in Destrehan, about 25 miles east of New Orleans, says his ministry has paid cash for three private jets.

“You know I’ve owned three different jets in my life and used them and used them and just burning them up for the Lord,” Duplantis says in a video posted to his ministries’ website.

Duplantis is now reportedly seeking the funds for a Dassault Falcon 7X, worth $54 million.

The problem with the previous jets, he says, is that they require multiple stops to refuel. But flying the Falcon 7X, Duplantis says, will allow him to save money and not pay “those exorbitant prices with jet fuel all over the world.”

“I really believe that if Jesus was physically on the earth today, he wouldn’t be riding a donkey,” Duplantis says in the video, “He’d be in an airplane preaching the gospel all over the world.”

Duplantis’ video comes after another televangelist, Kenneth Copeland in Texas, purchased the Gulfstream V jet for $36 million.

Why would Jesus fly in a jet when he can fly like Superman instead?

Bottom of a page had the "top 10" lawyers in the world:

Scott Pruitt
Michael Cohen
Robert Mueller
James Comey
Rod Rosenstein
Scooter Libby
Barack Obama

Aside from it being only 7 names, it also said "+2 more"

What a strange list.

that PECO $75 refrigerator 'recycling' rebate that has been showing up as a banner ad for me SUCIS. They won't come and pick up my fridge because of no on-street parking and the truck won't come into my driveway.
