Sorry you're having to go through this. I thought my 2 year old's unwillingness to sleep through the night was tough. Your story puts my issue in perspective.

Also, as an aside, my 7 year old has had persistent sore throats for about 8 months now. It will sometimes go away for a while, but then it seems to come back. At first I thought it was allergies because it was spring and her nose was often runny, but it's been going on long enough that I'm starting to get concerned there may be a longer term issue. She has an appointment for an immunization tomorrow (so many are required by the school), so I'm hoping to talk to the doctor about it.

Allergy testing is a good thing. One of the three is allergic to mold, and takes meds spring though the first couple frosts.

I didn't really think about it being an allergy that lasts that long. I should probably get her tested.

temper tantrums and minor mood swings and general anxiety over school and such are normal things kids go through
The behavior described is not within that realm even as "escalated" behavior. There are definite OCD traits at play here and chemical imbalance in brain chemostry
I hope this gets figured out and worked through Jay

You're probably right...just spitballing on my part, not doubting anyone's doctor.

Aren't you in China, a place not exactly known for its air quality? Some people are more sensitive to pollution than others.

But it started about 5 months before we got here. And the air quality has been quite good, other than 2 or 3 days. The air apparently gets better every year because they are moving in the right direction. We just stay inside on the few bad days and make use of the school's air filtration system. The winter will be worse though. If any of us will have problems, it'll show up then. But I don't anticipate any problems.

These things can be very weird, wrt air quality. Our old house was on a congested, stop and go street at rush hour. You could see brake dust accumulate on the windowsills at the front of the house. This was also before we recognized that keeping the windows shut during spring and fall was better for all involved with the allergies. Anyway, the kid at the time had frequent respiratory infections and was diagnosed with asthma, and put on a regimen of nebulizers etc.

We moved here, and within a few months, no more respiratory problems, no more asthma meds, etc. Of course, the mold and pollen allergies are more problematic for all, because of the open farmland etc.

Wish I could offer help, Phatj, but I can only give sympathy. Nothing makes you feel more helpless than when your child is struggling and you either don't know the cause or just don't know how to help her. She's got two great, concerned parents, though, and I feel confident you'll work through this.

There's a growing amount of research showing that people who live near highways and places like that are more prone to respiratory problems and circulatory disease. It's not surprising, but most people don't think about it. We lived on a mountain in switzerland and there was some evidence that it was bad. In the valley, there were frequently smoggy days, but the AQI rarely got above 50. Where we were, there was some evidence that cancer rates were higher. The idea was that certain kinds of particulates tended to hang around that altitude. The air smelled fresh and clean, but that's what the data was showing. Who knows. The fact that you could see the stuff on your windows is pretty bad. I'd rather have some pollen and mold in my lungs than brake fluid. We've evolved to live with the former.

Don't really have first hand experience with this parenting thing, but my senses tell me this is not the best way to handle this situation.

I dunno. While zero is pretty surprising, so many kids have so many activities that conflicts are inevitable. What struck me when Lil' Vulture was small was how RSVPing was basically non-existent. You'd host a party with no idea how many kids would show up.

No way were invitations sent out. Out of 30 parents, somebody would have been free, looking for something to do, wanting free pizza and/or have common decency.

I had parties through 4th grade but we didn't go anywhere. One year we borrowed a movie projector and some Laurel and Hardy movies from the library and watched in the basement. Good times.

Having a McDonald's party was new and popular when I was little. I never had one but thought it would be awesome.

My kids also had parties through 4th grade. Usually at home.

This is pretty much my experience too. We did home parties for my son until like 2nd grade then he wanted to have them at places and the last few years he has a few friends over and we'll take them to a movie or something and then they stay up all night playing video games.

Lil' Vulture mostly had parties at home, or we'd use a space like the church's parish hall. However, Mrs. Vulture always insisted on a theme. One year, it was a pirate party, and we built this pirate ship out of cardboard and these plastic fasteners.
