Dunno how unpopular this opinion this is, or whether many others have an opinion on this topic at all, but pergolas are dumb.

I think they provide shade, but haven't thought much about them. what don't you like about them

Depending on construction (and the angle of the sun) they can provide some shade. If shade is your goal I think there's better options.

i think they're cool looking

We have one on our deck and I thought it looked pretty sweet when we bought the house but now I hate it. It provides no shade, so when we bough deck furniture we got one with an umbrella. The umbrella is about 3” too tall to fit under the pergola.

Never even heard of it. Looked it up and they look cool, but why choose that over a proper gazebo?
