I've never had Ledo - I guess I should try it.

Ballamer does have some great pizza:

Paulie Gee's

I like Ledo's as better than any national chain that you can get around here in DC, but I wouldn't call it great pizza or anything.

I didn't realize Paulie Gee's had expanded. Are they franchises or does he own all of them? I remember visiting the Greenpoint location when it first opened and he was walking around the dining room chatting up customers. Now that's pretty decent pizza. I didn't visit nearly enough because if I ever went for pizza in Brooklyn, I was going to Motorino (or Di Fara if I was making a trip out of it), but I should've diversified more.

We live up Route 3 between DC and Baltimore... Crofton area... a lot of restaurants... any recommendations in this area that aren't chains... a lot of times we get one of the places that deliver but willing to go out to pick up really good stuff since we have pizza at least once a week...

I don't get to the MD side much, so I'm not any help. I can get you around all of the VA side though.

I don't think he's gone franchise yet. I met him at Pizza Palooza in National Harbor - he's pretty engaged in his business.

I dunno what is going on with coal-oven chains, but I just went to Providence Coal Fired Pizza, a mini-chain which has a lot in common with Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza (about 40 locations) except the pie is more Neapolitan.

In your area - MD & VA - there is another chain, Coal Fire Pizza. I haven't had it but it looks promising

I was there only once but it's one of the better Neapolitans I've had anywhere. But it's big enough that if they changed pizzaioli the new guy could be overloading the pie and serving soupy pizza.

We ate this:

Better than Comet Ping Pong, and no babies were harmed in making my pie

There is a Coal Fire Pizza in the Village at Waugh Chapel, which is right across Route 3 from us... less than 5 minutes... been here a little more than a year and never tried it but I'm gonna have to make an effort to check it out

Been thinking of trying Mamma Roma's in Odenton near Fort Meade... in a poll of neighbors on NextDoor, they were the runaway favorite with like 80 some votes to Ledo's 30 some...

Finding a local place for grub near the Keswick is a challenge unless you just want beer and burgers.

I've passed on that pizza joint several times. The Greek place was good in an old-diner way

Had wonderful pie in Costa Mesa CA at Filomena's Italian Kitchen.

Met the chef owner, she is from Absecon and also lived in Aston.

There are 3 locations of Ecco Pizza Shoppe in CA: Anaheim, Irvine, Costa Mesa.

I had this excellent Neapolitan Diavola at the Anaheim location in the converted ctirus packing house that is now a huge upscale food court.

Last night I was finally going to get Rione's Roman-style pizza, but walking up Locust street from Broad, I stumbled upon Alice (A Lee Chay) - the first American outpost of an Italian chain pizzeria, serving Roman-style pizza. Damp and rainy, I decided to forego Rione once again.

This pizza was pretty spectacular. True Roman style, sold by the slice and at room temp, priced by wieght. My slices came to about $3.50 each, and the server cut each slice into 2 squares.

Crust was crackly crisp on the bottom, delicious as good Italian bread, and perfectly airy and chewy inside.

Bacon/potato pizza was fine but a little bland.
The sausage slice was wonderful, bursting with flavor.
I need to go back and try others.
Too many of the pies had some sickly looking pink chopped tomatoes, but the prosciutto pie shown here looked good.
I spoke to a member of the owner's family who said they have their own special delicate flour grown outside of Rome.
