It's a dog, dog, dog, dogworld

I've been cooking rice and beef for my little lady, trying to get her to put back some weight, but now she's started vomiting. This sucks. The vet pretty much told me there's nothing we can do, and I have no idea how long she has. I don't even know how to make her more comfortable.
The vet did mention a medication that would help her appetite, so I'll probably try that. She's still in good spirits, doing dog stuff. But it's like she went from puppy to old dog in a week.

Had to put this little girl down today. Liver failure. Broke my heart.

Aw, very sorry about your loss. You certainly did everything you could for her at the end, she had a great home.

Sorry for your loss. Ditto to Rockinghorse's comments.

One of my parents' two dogs is on her last legs. She's 14, a beagle mix, and I think she's got some tumors or something not the best. Plus she seems to have some arthritis going on in her back legs and has trouble jumping and going up stairs. Anyway, since she can't really see or hear well she's taken to basically lying on top of you to make sure she is aware when you move so she doesn't miss out on anything, and it's completely adorable. I've been watching the dogs for the past few days as the parents are down the shore and there are a bunch of stairs down there which she can't really do so well. She's been following me around the house dutifully either to guilt me into giving her food or to make sure I don't ditch her. She's currently passed out with her chin on my knee on the couch so she knows if I get up. Dogs are the best.

I've been meaning to lighten things up and show off the foster program my wife and I have been doing the last couple years. Texas is overpopulated with dogs for various reasons, mainly the tons of small remote towns plus general disdain for neutering. Other parts of the country keep the populations controlled and so are better venues for adoptions.

Enter "Love on Wheels", a partnership between a Dallas area humane society, a fantastic rescue facility in Syracuse, and also a couple of pet transport services. The program has sent around 1,000 dogs from kill shelters in the south to permanent homes in the north. An "underground railroad for dogs" as one of our friends pointed out.

Our role is to serve as temporary fosters for 2-4 weeks, briefly training and socializing the pups in between transport runs to NY. Downside is constant assault on our house (chewing, potty accidents, etc) but we also get all the cuteness and playtime. Our two older dogs would probably prefer we opt out of this but they have a good time too. Here's just three of the 25ish dogs we have fostered. The husky in top pic is my mother-in-law's dog who was visiting.
