Mrs. and Lil' Vulture are starting to create an irresistible common front in their demand for a dog. A German shepherd mix seems like a good fit for us. Pros? cons? Boy? girl? Note--we have a nicely sized back yard, there are 4-5 little dogs next store that never stop barking anyway so maybe another dog can intimidate them into silence? And, we have two cats, one of whom is a bit on the elderly side and really doesn't like being bothered at all by anyone or anything and is the strongest argument I have right now for why we shouldn't get a dog.

Of course, we'd go rescue.

If you can afford it, I'd say go for it. You'd be giving a dog a much needed home and I can almost guarantee you (if you don't totally hate dogs), you will bond with this dog more than your wife and maybe your son.

You'd be doing a good deed.

Doing a bit of research, it seems like a German Shepherd is not an ideal dog to have with cats.

I'm not really a dog person, but there are some dogs I think are really cool. Something trainable, sociable (but not overly so) and one that will only bark if it has a good reason to do so.

Basically, I want a canine version of myself. That's why I was thinking something like a shepherd/lab mix.

A friend of mine consulted with many people, especially those who work at shelters and clinics, about dog breeds that do well with cats. If I recall, he was mostly recommend small dogs like Pomeranians but one of the few bigger dogs that does well are the Shetland Sheepdogs. He eventually found one to adopt and it's worked out very well.

Conversely, he was warned against adopting hunting breeds (all hounds), terriers as well as herding breeds.

I hope that helps.

We have a golden retriever/german shepherd mix (at least we think that is what it is). He and the cat get along for the most part but the cat was only 6 months old when we got the dog. Getting around the same time is sonething I recommend, btw. When we got together, she had a cat and I had a dog and that didn't go to well.

Mixed breeds are better than pure-breds and are easier to find in a shelter.

The real problem is the older cat's mental health. I just wonder if she'd adjust, or go completely over the edge.
