Michael Arndt is the screenwriter for 7, who wrote Toy Story 3.
Kathleen Kennedy will be executive producer, not Lucas, and her husband Frank Marshall is producer. Together, they have produced some amazing stuff and not much garbage.
Lawrence Kasdan, who did Empire and Return, is on board to write 8 and 9.

Can't wait for the ending where it turns out they all died in the destruction of Alderaan.

I went back through this thread to see if anyone mentioned Abrams. Had to laugh when I saw this post

considering that I'm now absolutely terrified that JJ will insert time travel or alternate universes into the mix. And that's coming from someone who LOVED Fringe and enjoyed the new Trek.

Endor was purgatory. None of the events of Return of the Jedi really happened and Darth Vader and the emperor are still alive. Luke did solve his daddy issues though, so he can go to heaven.

With Disney now putting these out, does that mean no more Fox Fanfare at the beginning?

I would be pretty fine with changing that beginning anyway. After seeing the originals a million times and the prequels and every fan movie ever made starting with the same opening, it loses most of the effect it once had.

I think the biggest real complaint with the new trek was that it strayed so far from Roddenberry's utopian vision to just become another mindless action vehicle.

Not that his utopia looked all that great:

That makes me happy--stop the shameless money grabs and move forward.

At the same time though, I've never seen a single 3D movie (at least not since the new wave started), but the Battle of Coruscant (opening of Ep III) would have been incredible in 3D.

The Star Wars movies don't begin by showing the names of the producers, the director, the stars, "a so and so production", "a so and so film", etc. This has been a huge bone of contention between George Lucas and the Hollywood establishment over the years. It violates the agreements that the studios have with the guilds, and it's one reason why the films have either been directed by Lucas or by no names like Richard Marquand. With Disney taking over I wonder if they're going to abandon the iconic scroll opening in favor of a tradition movie opening.

I don't think that will be a huge deal. Clint Eastwood hasn't had opening credits (aside from the title) in any of his movies since 1982.

Huh? That's old news. Yeah, Lucas got fined by the DGA, but Star Wars isn't the only film that does that anymore by any stretch. Eastwood has already been mentioned as a good example, but there are plenty of others. None of Nolan's Batman films even showed a title until the end.

Groupon has Lego Star Wars Key-Ring Light for $5 ($11.99 List Price). Four Characters Available. http://gr.pn/WzvOri shipping is $2 for one or two and free for three or more. Got three storm troopers for my kid. He loves Star Wars, storm trooper/clones and flash lights, so this should be awesome.

As bad as the prequels were, I don't know that I can *really* accept any SW movie not made by George Lucas. In being sold to Disney, it has gone from the closest thing to a novel written on film that I can think of to just another "franchise" property to be drug out every few years to make another guaranteed $400M or whatever.

it would be like if Sony Pictures bought the rights to Citizen Kane and just started producing one sequel every three years. What does that really have to do with Orson Welles' story or vision?
