Halladay XII: Now with Roy Halladay!

Postby slamjim » Mon Dec 14, 2009 23:42:08

Wait, Lee and Blanton would be nearly the same price this season. Both would be free agents. If we needed the money and we are trading our own prospects to Toronto why didn't we just trade off Blanton to anyone at all to get rid of the salary and keep Lee. He leaves, we get 2 draft picks and have $9 a year to spend on another free agent pitcher. And damn why couldn't it have been J.A. instead of Kyle?

So does this mean we are signing Blanton to a long term deal? If not, WTF?
Halladay/ Hamels/ Happ / ????? after next season.

And I agree with whomever said this is all Amaro's fault for that crappy Moyer deal. No Moyer deal = Lee/ Halladay for a season.

This trade SUCKS no matter how it's sliced now.

Look, the Lee for Seattle prospects that we keep MAKES NO SENSE. Thus, I'm going to refuse to believe it.

I mean, seriously. You could throw darts and make a better deal. Seattle would be embarrassed to even offer it.

So I'll believe it after it happens. Check that, a day after it happens. Because if it happens, I'll just assume it's the alcohol and it'll all be better the next day.

Hey, why not wait until you find out the details before you go whining about everything?

Know what I mean?

i was referring to all the whining

I see. Well that's significantly less hypocritical. TBF, I was making a bad joke about Amaro, though I do think he's very overrated on this board.

I think we were all impressed with the Lee trade. If this goes down the way it is being reported, he is dead to me

I loved the Lee trade, too. But other than that, I think he's been kinda poor/below average.

Sources say only Phillies would receive Seattle prospects for Lee. None
would be shipped to Toronto. Kyle Drabek is involved.

In that case, it makes no sense to make this a three-team deal.

Shop Lee on the open market for the best deal, namely the Rangers.

Or you can not trade Lee at all.

Right. I'm just assuming they're set on getting some value for Lee.

If we're just dumping salary, trade Blanton, anything's better than nothing, and somebody would take Blanton at his price after looking at some of these free agent deals (like Brad Penny, for example).

Which is why "salary dumping" Cliff Lee is absurd. Making it even worse is you are still trading Drabek?

I would tend to trust Zolecki, if he is saying just SEA prospects to us, then I am assuming we are paying out the a** to TOR for cash and trying to rationalize it/clear the rest of the cash by getting prospects back for Lee

I got home from the Sixers game and just read every page I missed (from 37) of the previous Halladay thread and every page of this one.

And I know nothing that I didn't know when I walked through the door.

Thanks a lot, sports "journalists." <- I mean the mainstream media, not you guys.

Fine, if Amaro wanted Halladay that much, he should have gotten him, extended him, been done with it. This brings us to the financial aspect. Ownership couldn't go over budget for this one season, knowing that Lee would be gone next year? Or Amaro couldn't just trade Blanton, i'm sure some team would have liked him. Salary dumping Cliff Lee is about as dumb as a move as you can make.

Bingo. If we are trading Lee to Seattle and keeping the prospects, it would only be because we are getting stud prospects that we really want. Which probably means 3 players to replace whomever we send to Toronto for Roy.

We're not trading Lee in a salary dump for far less than we are giving to Toronto for Halladay. We can dump Blanton to accomplish that.

not only for far less what we are giving up for halladay but far less what we gave up for lee in the first place.

there is no way this is true.

OK, I give up for now. I can't take it anymore. One minute I feel better, the next I feel like crap.

Zolecki tends to be right about Phils stuff, but it really doesn't make sense to trade Lee over Blanton. The difference is only 2 million, most of which could be saved by using cheap relievers for the back of the pen.

I'm sure we could get something for Blanton. Hell, even a straight salary dump would be better than the current rumor.

stark said they couldn't get anything for him

So get nothing for him. Who cares. If we can't find someone to take Ibanez is the answer to trade Utley?

Define "anything". I find it hard to believe that some team out there wouldn't value a league average starter who eats innings (literally) and only costs $7M or so.

Maybe we couldn't get any good prospects for him, but who cares if your goal is simply to dump salary?

That sounds like bull$#@!.

Whatever. Never thought that giving Moyer a 2nd year would crush the Phils this much.

Someone would take him for a non prospect at the very least. One of these teams that need a 4th or 5th starter, and are looking at the Jason Marquis of the world wanting real money in a multi year deal would be happy to take someone like Blanton at a reasonable cost for one year.

It could make sense with the idea of Amaro attempting to restock the farm system after paying way up (with what other bidders for Roy, really) in prospects to get Halladay. It would be that he's almost guilty about what he gave up for Roy and have to get Aumont, Gilles and another guy back in the Lee deal while clearing money, vs just selling Blanton

Not that I agree with this logic, just a possible explanation
