Phillies reportedly close to landing Halladay
Defending champions and Blue Jays making progress on deal for ace
The Philadelphia Phillies and Toronto Blue Jays reportedly are marking progress on a deal that would send star pitcher Roy Halladay to Philadelphia.
The Angels also are interested and have intensified their push, FOXSports.com reported.
A deal is not imminent, FOXSports.com reported, but the Phillies are believed to be better position to land Halladay than other suitors such as the Dodgers, Rangers, Angels, Red Sox, Yankees and Brewers.
On Saturday, the Phillies -- considered the front-runners to acquire Halladay -- reportedly rejected a formal proposal sent their way by the Blue Jays. According to an ESPN report, Philadelphia balked at an offer that would have sent pitchers J.A. Happ and Kyle Drabek, along with outfield prospect Dominic Brown, to Toronto in exchange for Halladay.
Citing an executive of a team that has spoken with the Phillies, the report indicates that Philadelphia is opposed to giving up both Happ and Drabek.
MLB.com learned that Jays assistant general manager Tony LaCava scouted the latest outing of Phillies pitching prospect Carlos Carrasco, who could possibly be substituted for either Happ or Drabek in a deal.
The Phillies and Blue Jays continue to discuss names, including outfielder Michael Taylor, catcher Lou Marson and shortstop Jason Donald, and Toronto would prefer to have the matter resolved prior to Halladay's next scheduled start, on Wednesday in Seattle. Major League Baseball's non-waiver Trade Deadline is on Friday, but the Jays don't want the process to drag on that long.
The Phillies are still thought of as the favorite to acquire Roy Halladay. But major league sources told FOXSports.com on Saturday morning that the Angels have intensified their own efforts to trade for the Toronto ace.
"They are not the only game in town," one executive said in reference to the Phillies.
As many as five teams are talking with the Jays about Halladay. The Phillies, Angels and Rangers are in that group, and the White Sox have not been ruled out.
The Jays don't expect to deal Halladay by the end of the weekend, according to one person with close knowledge of the negotiations. But it's possible that a resolution could come before the purported Tuesday deadline set by Toronto general manager J.P. Ricciardi.
The Angels, very involved in the market for pitching, caught the Jays' attention with an increased offer on Friday, according to multiple executives with knowledge of the Halladay market. In talks with the Angels, the Jays would want at least one player from the major league roster and another who could make an impact in 2010.
Toronto's needs on the left side of the infield would make Brandon Wood an intriguing prospect. It's not clear if the Angels would be willing to include a young starter in the deal, such as Jered Weaver or Ervin Santana.
"There's no doubt that the Angels have players that would be competitive," said one source with good knowledge of the team's farm system. "But it's a matter of what they want to give up."

This is just a regurgitation of stories from yesterday.

If Scutaro is in the deal, i'm more prone to give the Jays what they want. The Phils can recoup what they gave up in the trade via the picks and the 09 team gets it's Ace and RH Bat off the bench.
