Stark's sources

Sources: Jays want too much, Phils say

If the Blue Jays' asking price for Roy Halladay is J.A. Happ, top pitching prospect Kyle Drabek and high-ceiling outfield prospect Dominic Brown, the Phillies aren't buying.

The Blue Jays had formally proposed that package to the Phillies on Thursday, in exchange for the 32-year-old Cy Young award-winner, ESPN's Peter Gammons confirmed Friday.

But two baseball people familiar with the Phillies' thinking told ESPN.com on Saturday that that's not a deal the Phillies are willing to make.

"The ball is in their court," said Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi, who did not sound optimistic that a deal would happen.

so if he signs no problem you have a utility guy and if some team is dumb enough to give up their pick we benefit

Says they're discussing Happ, Drabek, Taylor, Brown, Marson, Donald, Carrasco, and specifically said NOT Knapp.

Some combination of those players in a 3 for 1 or 4 for 1 swap.

Anyone else want to hire someone to punch Ricciardi in the face when this is over? "The ball is in their court" - JPR

Do the Blue Jays think they are getting a package comparable to that from someone at some point in the future? Or do they think having Halladay around in 2010 while the team finishes in 4th place again is worth more than a lesser package?

It's called an anchor. It's a starting point in negotiation. The Jays would be stupid not to ask for a ridiculous deal. Now the Phillies will counter will something lower and we'll meet somewhere in between. See you at the parade

Rube should get his posse together, fly up Toronto this weekend to meet with this bozo, and get this thing done.

It has to get done. Both sides would be stupid to let the opportunity pass. If they don't get it done, a pox on both their houses!

Let me see if i have this right. You make the comment that you'd enjoy if an entire baseball team died in a car crash, and I'm the bad guy?

ya know...it would really have to be a pretty big car anyway

Not necessarily. I don't recall the original comment, but if it was about the Mets... well, we've all seen how many clowns can get into one tiny car.

IMO that's a deal to jump at. Even if it's:

Drabek, Brown, Happ and, say, Donald, you get:

Halladay, Scutaro and four draft picks over the next two years. And even in the unlikely event Scutaro accepts arbitration, he'd be a fantastic bench guy to have. With those four draft picks you'd get some real quality prospects.

I wonder who has more leverage here, or maybe the more important question, who needs to get the done more?

In my opinion, the pressure is really on Toronto, because they piece they want to move declines in value every second. Two weeks ago, Halladay was worth X. Now, he's worth less than X, since the team that acquires him gets 2 or 3 fewer starts out of him.

The Phillies by contrast during most of this period have been winning, without Halliday, so they should believe they can walk away if the price isn't reasonable.

On the other hand, who knows what's on the table, and what other teams are in the mix.

what's great is that within 7-10 days of this deal's consummation, we'll be bitching about

a) suctaro getting too much playing time/too many abs
b) scutaro not getting enough playing time/ not enough abs
c) halladay not striking out as many batters/inning as hoped
d) halladay giving up a distressing # of i) HRs ii) doubles iii) HBPs iv) foul tips
e) cholly not managing his new/different resources effectively
f) wishing happ were available for long relief

just like it ever was
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

Hearing things like that renews my hopes that we'll get him for something like Happ/Taylor/Donald/D'Arnaud, or those four plus Carrasco for Halladay and Scutaro.

Hold that line, Smugs!

With the four draft picks, that's a rape for the Phils. If JPR will include Scutaro, he'd be crazy not to insist on both Drabek and Brown.
