Halladay IV: A New Hope

Yeah, and the point is we probably won't have to. Flop did a great job explaining that trading 4 players does not a mortgage make

The draft philosophy argument sprung up out of that, b/c MB's fear is that Arbuckle's departure will further cripple the team after trading his drafted top prospects

Remember people, everything we've heard up until now hasn't been directly involved with an OFFER, from either club. This is ALL POSTURING. IMO Amaro wanted Drabek to go in the trade, so he started pumping him up through the media. He wanted JP thinking Drabek was the crown jewel to get...and from a media manipulation standpoint it's worked perfectly.

Drabek will go in the trade but Knapp, the guy Amaro REALLY wanted to protect, will stay. Amaro learned from one of the best, and it's showing.

Nice. Now they know. We're screwed.

40%: He's not traded
30%: We get him, but give up waaaay too much
20%: We get him and love the deal
10%: Somebody else gets him

From Salisbury's column tomorrow:

Ricciardi would not name the Phillies players he wants, but several people with knowledge of the talks between the two teams said the Jays would require pitchers Drabek and Happ in the deal. And that’s just a start. There are indications that the Jays also like minor-league outfielder Dominic Brown, who is considered the Phils’ top position-player prospect by baseball people inside and outside the Phillies’ organization.

Drabek and Happ is fine with me if we keep Taylor/Brown

Playoff rotation = Halladay, Hamels, Blanton, Pedro = WFC II

J.A. Happ
Market Value: Strong Sell (all leagues)
Lowdown: Based on his fateful peripherals and glowing superficial stats, J.A. stands for “Justifiably Askew.” On the surface, Happ has deservedly forced his way into the NL ROY conversation. His unblemished 7-0 record, 2.68 ERA and 1.15 WHIP have propelled the rookie into the SP upper echelon. Since he was inserted into the rotation on May 23rd, he’s totaled the 24th-best line among starters, according to Baseball Monster. But Happ-y days in Philly aren’t here to stay. His very fortunate .242 BABIP, propensity for homers (1.05 HR/9), unsettling 3.31 BB/9 and 87.0 strand rate, are all signs of impending ERA doom. According to his 4.36 FIP, a major correction is on the horizon. Of course, numbers often skew perception. When placed in high-leverage situations Happ has shown marked poise and excellent control. But unless he’s part Superman, it’s unlikely he can stave off the demons of misfortune forever. Sell high.
Fearless Forecast (Rest of season): 74 IP, 6 W, 4.88 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 51 K

I think I agree. But adding Taylor and/or Brown to that would tip the scales to "WTF???, Rube?"

I do, however, like the idea of Happ driving up his value.

If they're demanding Happ and Drabek, they better not expect any other above average prospect in the deal.

I like the line "There are indications that the Jays also like minor-league outfielder Dominic Brown."

Yeah, no shit. We like him too. But you can't have him AND Happ AND Drabek, so F off.

They don't want Happ. They want us to think they want Happ because they know we won't trade him, which is stupid

I think Taylor, Drabek, Carrasco, and Donald should be all they get out of us. That's the most I am willing to go.

For some reason that line from that story really irritates me. I realize it may be the writer's language, and not Toronto's, but it feels like "Oh, we want Happ and Drabek. And we like Dominic Brown too." Yeah, well fuck you. That's not the way it fuck-ing works, you see, because Halladay has got like four places he'll probably go, his value falls through the floor after this deadline, and Drabek, Carrasco, Donald, and Marson is a bettter haul than you'll get from most of the teams that have the wherewithal to stay in this in the first place. So you'll take that deal and you'll like it, fucke-rs.

Oddly, I'm really reluctant to trade Carrasco, moreso than Taylor. It just doesn't feel like he's being valued properly. Of course he's not untouchable or anything, and maybe Toronto loves him, but I'd just as soon hold on to him.

You never want to trade an asset when its value is depressed, but with another bad season, Carrasco's value will be even lower. I dont consider him a throw-in, but if he can bring a valuable asset, I'm in favor of moving him now.

Agreed. I don't like the idea of Ruiz as our starting catcher for the next few years.

I hope Carrasco impresses them beyond belief, because that's one guy I don't give a damn about

I really think that if this doesn't happen, it's going to be on account of J.P's douchenozzleness.

50% JP's douchebaggery, 50% Monty's satisfaction with last year and lack of desire to win more WFCs

Listen jerkface, I know no one at Villanova actually knows how to read, let alone comprehend, but that's not what I was saying at all. I feel like Carrasco is being treated as a throw in when his true value is above that. The reason I'd be willing to trade Taylor has nothing to do with his value relative to Carrasco but rather to his value relative to himself. If I was going to that dork convention you call a BSG meetup, I'd kick your ass.
