very unexpectedly, americans still have a chance in both singles draws, despite early exits and absences of isner, querry, and the williams sisters.
Chung is pretty good and everyone should root for him over a 'the alt right has some interesting ideas' pizzagate truther named Tennys.

Looks like Fed had a cakewalk to another major with Joker and Nadal getting knocked out. Don't think Cilic has a chance.

Halep or Wozniacki will finally get their first major.

Continues for at least another month or so the string of no male player born in the 1990s winning a Grand Slam title. Pretty remarkable given that the eldest should be in their prime.

This was surprising 10 pages ago, and is even more so today. Had no chance of ending in the finals since Cilic was born in 1988. Suspect it will end soon, but will last at least until May.

Of course GenZ? is turning 18, so maybe they'll just skip over the 90s kids entirely.

Zverev, Rublev, Shapovalov, Tiafoe, Chung, Fritz, Kyrgios...one of these dudes will win one sometime.

Still you're right, it's pretty crazy that no one 19-29 right now has won a men's slam.

lmao

it is obviously not apples to apples but imagine leaving work for maternity leave and coming back having lost your status at your job and having to earn it back.

WTA rankings are also nuts if 8 months off drops you 452 spots when you take leave as obvious number 1.

She missed over 13 months. In tennis your ranking is based entirely on your results within the last twelve months. As of the beginning of February Serena hadn't played in a year and had no ranking. Since then she played two tournaments. She lost in the first round in one tournament and in the third round of the other.

They could change the rules to not punish players for missing long stretches of time. They could also make an exception for Serena the way they did for Monica Seles when she missed two years after she was stabbed. As it is they're just following their rules, and Serena just has to climb back up the rankings.

yeah and the rules are stupid. she was just cruising through roland garros.

until she withdrew with a pec injury, unfortunately.

haven't been following too close because coverage of the french open sucks.

marco cecchinato is in the semifinals against thiem. he was previously banned for match fixing but had it overturned on appeal. had never won a grand slam match and i think he only had like four tour wins coming in.

sloane stephens beat keys 4 and 4 to reach the final. she'll face top seed and world number one simona halep who is still looking for her first major.

delpo vs. nadal in the semis. nadal lost his first set to schwartzman yesterday but took the next three 3, 2 and 2.

Halep once again wilting on the big stage. Stephens up a set and a break on her way to win 2 of the last 3 slams. Halep about to go 0-4 in finals and none of them were even against Serena.

Not that it's over. But it's getting there. Deserves it for yelling so loudly each hit.

They should have made that grunting/yelling illegal years ago. I can't even watch a match where that is going on. Honestly, it's unsportsmanlike--it has to affect the player on the other side of the net.

They're so used to it that it can't have a real effect at that level. I'm fine with it being legal but I'm also fine with my being completely annoyed hearing a scream be the loudest thing coming through my tv every 2 seconds. Sports need some AI filter to keep every other sound but remove that.
