Nov. 30: According to a report from the New York Post's George King, the Phillies have interest in former Yankees Dellin Betances and Austin Romine, both of whom are free agents entering 2020. King notes that the team has also been linked to free agent Didi Gregorius, and that new Phillies manager Joe Girardi is undoubtedly aware of the clubhouse presence of each of the three, whom he managed while in New York.

Some Cubs news this morning, according to a source, they’re hiring Craig Driver to be first base/catching coach. Was with Phillies last two years. Worked wonders w Realmuto who won a Gold Glove in ‘19. Just two years in pro ball but great rep coaching catchers.

The non-tender deadline likely will mark the end of the Phillies tenures for second baseman César Hernández and third baseman Maikel Franco, potentially clearing the way for the signing of free-agent shortstop Didi Gregorius.
Hernández, 29, and Franco, 27, have spent their entire careers in the Phillies’ organization, Hernández signing out of Venezuela in July 2006, Franco out of the Dominican Republic in Jan. 2010. They have played nearly 1,500 games combined for the Phils, but the team almost certainly does not value either at his projected salary in arbitration — $11.8 million for Hernández, $5.7 million for Franco.
The signing of Gregorius, first mentioned as a possibility by MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi, certainly would make sense for the Phillies considering the shortstop’s history not just with former Yankees manager Joe Girardi, but also former bench coach Rob Thomson. If the Phils complete a deal with Gregorius, they would move Jean Segura from shortstop to second or third base, a possibility they discussed at the end of the season.
