Not unless his fastball has suddenly developed movement.

It moves from his hand to the catcher's mitt really quickly!

Now that the Phillies have a bonafide pitching coach, who knows what to expect out of any of the pitchers? Price could well be a difference maker both in what he can do with the Phillies current pitchers but also with FAs that want to be treated well and possibly improve.

Klentak was on WIP earlier today. Nothing earth shattering -- the most telling part was probably answering the Herrera question by touting Haseley and Quinn -- but he came off very reasonable and sharp imo

Have thought for a while that Wheeler/Hamels was the most likely/most realistic scenario for upgrading the rotation.

I also feel like having Price on board as pitching coach should allow the Phillies to take on a reclamation guy or two on the cheap to roll the dice on to create some potential competition for the back end of the rotation.

exactly, i like crunching numbers as good as the next nerd, but you bring that man into the office and ask him who he thinks he can fix. they can't fix everyone, but trust me, the good one's know.

Price was Homer Bailey's pitching coach back in the day when Bailey was a hotshot with the Reds. Bailey bounced back a little bit this past year

Shortest distance between two points is a straight line. None of that inefficient movement.

ReadingPhilly wrote:the expanded version. willing to sign for one year.
“I know Philly is finally trying to make that push,” Hamels told MLB.com this week. “They’re building their roster. If I fit on their roster and their plans, I’d love the opportunity to come back. It’s probably more on their end, though, to reach out and see if I actually do fit in their plans. It would be difficult for me to say, ‘Hey, I want to play there, can you guys make it happen?’ But I’m always willing to play for that team and city and attempt to win a World Series. That’s where I am right now. I just want to have the opportunity to get to the postseason, just so that I can try to win.”

Hamels, 35, means it, too. He is a free agent for the first time in his career following the final season of a seven-year, $158 million contract, which he originally signed with the Phillies in July 2012. Hamels said he is willing to sign a one-year contract to join a team that has a shot to put another championship ring on his finger. The Cubs declined to make him a qualifying offer by Monday's deadline, which means there are no strings attached -- no team will have to forfeit a Draft pick to sign him.

“I’m not there to handcuff somebody or an organization,” Hamels said. “That’s what the younger guys can do. I can do one year here and there and just play as long as I can play. I think that’s what will help give me an opportunity to play on teams that are trying to go to the postseason. If you need one guy, I can just kind of bounce around. Obviously, if the Phillies were interested in longer than one, I’d entertain that, too. But I think I want the opportunity to have as many opportunities to get to the postseason and try to win.

“I’ll go every year. I’ll prove myself. I don’t mind having my back against the wall. I think I perform better like that anyway. It just keeps me more accountable.”

7/158 ended up being a pretty good value right? 30+ starts and ERA+ well over 100 almost every year.

Hope he comes back.

fwiw, i just used the average of the mlbtr and fangraphs contract aav estimates and the steamer projections to assemble what i believe to be the most total predicted 2020 fwar value the phillies could get set of fa acquisitions that (a) could fit in under the cap assuming successful dumps of disposal roster members and (b) doesn't include cole or rendon:
fwar aav name
3.1 $19m wheeler
3.0 $12m gibson (was way under my radar before reading through the fangraphs list)
2.8 $13m moustakas
2.1 $15m hamels
totals are 11.0 fwar and $59 million.

the problem is that the steamer projected values of the guys that would have to be traded to stay under the cap would total to 5 or 6 fwar! conclusion: even though i suspect fangraphs is overestimating the actual on-field value that will be delivered by cesar, maik and odubel in 2020 (a total of 3.4 fwar, after being good for just 0.8 fwar in 2019 with only cesar being non-negative ?!?!?) we will have a very hard time closing the gap to mets-braves-nats without signing the top two fa's and/or going well over the luxury tax threshold. unless middleton authorizes crazy money again, 2020 is going to be another disappointment for those hoping to see the phis in the postseason.

Klentak, who has not yet fielded questions from beat writers about offseason plans, stressed in this interview how important it is for Phillies to not forfeit draft picks through free-agent signings.
