Yep. They're dreaming of the whole nation staying home on a fall Sunday evening to watch a two-hour cable TV show where one or more of these things will always happen:

1 - The selections will be so obvious there is no suspense
2 - Most fans don't know the difference between the wild card teams anyway so who cares
3 - Selections will be leaked a day or two beforehand

They'll try to spice up the show by having local celebrities announce the picks (maybe they can get Seinfeld for the Mets pick!), have the managers announce the pitching rotations, etc. Total flop

I think the more I think about it, the more I like the idea

The selection show itself is obviously stupid, but I don't think picking your opponent is

It may seem obvious to pick the team with the worst record but

A) sometimes teams enter the playoffs on a run, and you don't always want to play those teams
B) a team that makes the playoffs could have just had a major injury or two. If the Angels are the 5 seed, but just lost Trout to injury, you might pick them to play instead of a healthy 7th seed. Or if a different team lost their ace

Speaking of Trout, I can't help but think this also helps with promoting the league's stars. He's only been in the playoffs once and just going through the standings through his career, he'd have made it in a few more times with this format. I also think it'd be nice as a Phillies fan given we might be mediocre AGAIN if it got a bit easier to make it.
