Playoff expansion plan being discussed:

-- Best team in league gets a bye to the Divisional Series
-- Other two division champs and the top 2nd place team will be seeds #2 through #4
-- Three more teams make the playoffs as part of a wild card pool
-- During a Sunday end-of-season "selection show", the #2 seed would get first choice of who they want to play from the wild card pool, then the #3 seed would choose next, leaving the top wild card (#4) to play whatever team remains
-- Wild Card round would be best-of-3, with the higher team hosting all 3 games (so the wild card pool teams would never host a playoff game unless they reach the DS)

So using last year's NL as an example:

#1 Dodgers get a bye to the NLDS
#2 Braves would host a best-of-3 against their choice of the Brewers, Mets or Diamondbacks waiting in the wild card pool
#3 Cardinals would host a best-of-3 against their choice of the remaining two teams in the wild card pool
#4 Nationals would host a best-of-3 against the last remaining team

What’s the point of a 162 game regular season if you’re gonna do that?

More playoff teams (i.e. more TV) with more incentive to be the top seed and avoid that shit while not being off for too long

How about if this was in place last year and the #2 seed Yankees got first choice among the Rays, Indians or Red Sox? Would they choose the Sawx or avoid them? That's where the drama of the selection show comes into play

That seems worth its own thread

The positives:

No more dumb one game playoff
I kinda like three game series all in one place as it's similar to regular season. If you're as bad as 5-7 seed, you shouldn't get a home game right away anyway

The negatives:

That's a lot of fucking teams. Going to be some 78-84 teams making it some years.
Seems like it will be a mess when there's ties. Looking at recent standings, it looks like there would have been three different 6-7 seeds in the AL in 2017 at 80-82. What the hell would they do then?

Edit: oh and the best team in each league is finally rewarded, so that's another positive

Trevor Bauer doesn't seem to like it:

No idea who made this new playoff format proposal, but Rob is responsible for releasing it, so I’ll direct this to you, Rob Manfred. Your proposal is absurd for too many reasons to type on twitter and proves you have absolutely no clue about baseball. You’re a joke.

I like this.

Better version might be going even further, let the top team get a bye to the LCS, then:

1 game play in game:
7 at 4
6 at 5

3 game wild card round
worse advance seed at 2
better advance seed at 3

5 game divisional between the two winners, standard 2-2-1

Then the winner of that plays 1 in a 7 game LCS.

Feel like that's the best balance of giving the best team a pseudo-pennant, rewarding the division winners, while also having a bunch of playoff shenanigans.
