OMG, I wasn't going to dig this thread up, but since you did, Ballard's gutter ball was reminiscent of how I won a PBA regional tournament at Rockaway, NJ last month. In the quarterfinals, my opponent needed only a mark to beat me, and left the 3-7-9 split. He got 2 on the second ball, and I won by one pin. Then in the title game, again my opponent needed only a mark to win, and left the 7-10. Some days, it is better to be lucky than good. 8)

I'm bowling in Howell, NJ this weekend, near Lakewood. Probably bowling Turnersville, NJ in late August. That center has replaced the one in Pennsauken that you saw me bowl at.

Still making babies and winning tournaments at 47. Guess I still got it! 8)

Edit: Oh yeah, states are in Allentown next year!

just got back from my first trip to nationals

bowled team event first on tues night: 552, started off with a 162 and then had two 190s. i seemed to be pulling the ball even though i didn't feel i was...i guess it's because i was used to bowling on a typical house shot with more oil in the middle and less outside. i did start to get it a bit. my team had 2811, that looks to cash for a little bit

2nd day we bowled doubles, had 1110 total, I had 553. I basically did the same thing as the day before, but in reverse. i left so many splits and started off the first game with 3 straight opens but ended with a 194.

singles was great. had 735 and had 5 opens (4 splits). I also missed a ten pin the 10th frame of the 2nd game that was right in the pocket. i was really on and figured out most of the problems i was having the first 6 games. i looked down beyond the arrows and it helped me control the line so much more. it's currently 63rd place, so pretty good for my first time

Damn! 735 at nationals! That's just, wow! I'm speechless! That should definitely get you a nice check. I hope you were in a lot of brackets with a score like that! (That's where the real money is at nationals-brackets)

Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, I haven't been to nationals since 1997 @ Huntsville.

hey, do you know how the hell to play the viper pattern? i have bowled two HORRIBLE scores on it and can't seem to find a spot on the lane.

Well, I've never had too much success on the Viper myself. It's supposed to play outside, like 5-6-7 board, but a lot depends on the surface and the volume.

I don't know "viper", but I've always had really good success with "Flash" and "Strike 90".

That's harsh. Never saw that before. What year was this?

I was a rabid bowler from about 13-15, but it jacked my back up and was hard on my thumb. There are almost no lanes anywhere in the city here and I only bowl on rare occasions now, though I still enjoy it. Never had a perfect game, I think my high was like 267 or something like that. I did average about 170 for a league once. In fact, I think it was the Acme bowlers league at Adam's Lanes, where all the Acme people that worked all night, would show up at 9 or 10am ready to party -- I used to cut school at the end of 10th grade to be in that league. Hooked up with a 19 year old from Feasterville ... can't remember her name but she was sexy!

Couple years back, when they still had lanes in Japantown here -- my buddy (also from Philly) we bowled a few games, the guy next to us looked like a pro I think he had like three games nothing below a 250 game -- we were like marvelling at his skill and consistency. So smooth.

Fun game. Miss it sometimes.

plastic ball championship on espn at 1

only allowed to use one ball, a spare ball, all week. the pattern was shortened to how it used to be in the 80s to compensate.

what pattern?

THey use a special ball for spares?

Is bowling really more complicated than chucking a ball down a lane to hit the pins?

anything above open lane bowling is difficult, and it gets increasingly so as you move up. they put down a fairly easy oil pattern for league bowlers, local tournaments are a bit tougher, and pba regionals and the pba have multiple different patterns (short, long, heavy, light, different parts of the lane have different lengths, etc) and they require different approaches, attitudes, and balls depends on what one's skills are.

spare balls are basically plastic balls that dont move much, in order to be able to roll it faster and straighter at a spare.

For those of us who have only bowled recreationally, can you explain what this means?

Edit - You answered my question.
