Phillies Sign Kingery to Six Year Deal

Finding spots for Scott Kingery to start at 6 positions isn't just a baseball challenge. It's a managerial challenge - because it will mean making sure every "regular" who isn't playing buys into that.

"The only way to do that," Kapler said, "is ... communicate relentlessly."

From a Phillies standpoint, this is a phenomenal deal. The only way it doesn't work is if he flames out so hard that he wouldn't even be in the league in three years Singleton-style (for which there were other off-the-field issues) or suffers a catastrophic injury, and if the latter happened, the money would be the least of my concerns.

Any year where makes less than 4 million, which is the first four years, is pocket change. It's less than 2 percent of the payroll on a tax-level team, which is what I'd expect the team to be going forward. The only years that are "risky" in any way are years five and six, in which he'll make less money than the Phillies 7th inning middle reliever makes today, and I'll gladly trade that for the insanely team-friendly team options that they now have in the event that he becomes an above-average regular or better.

I'm not really worried about precedent either, because this deal is so team friendly that I'd imagine high end prospects in the future might prefer to roll the dice, but hell, if this is the new precedent, sign me up.

You can give every starter a day off every week. When you give Santana a day off, Hoskins can play first, Kingery LF.

You also have to consider Nick Williams and Aaron Altherr and finding ABs for them.

It's a good problem to have I suppose.

Yes it is. I just got done reading scorecasting. One of the takeaways there was how it's not playing away from home that results in the home field advantage in sports it's the multiple days of games. More rest for players can only be a good thing.

This seems like a lot to throw at a kid that has never regularly played most these positions in a real game/in the majors at all.

It may "seem" that way, but it is actually chump change.

I think he meant asking him to play 6 positions, not the money.

We said the same thing about BB before the Sixers season. All those good players getting minutes. By mid-season, it felt like we had no bench depth. So it works itself out. Kapler will find a way to keep everyone happy.

Bewteen this and the OF/1B situation, Kapler is going to have his hands full

I think it's a bit of an unnecessary risk, but the dollars are low enough that I think it's fine. I'm excited to watch him mash.

What's the risk? Really? Like getting 24m of value out of him in 6 seasons is pretty darn high. The upside of the 3 super team friendly option years and showing players that you're an organization willing to do this far outweigh the dollar risk. 24m for one season is an albatross. Over 6 it's a rounding error. I contend there's almost no risk here.

The risk is that he could have a career ending injury tomorrow. Or the next day. Or the next day. All the days between now and when they really needed to do something like this. He could also not end up being as good as these early days suggest. It does happen.

It only makes sense if they want some cost certainty and they feel REALLY good about him adjusting to big league pitching.

Overall, I like it because the downside is small and the optics are great. But there is a risk.

All of this is true of any long-term deal

The risk is in his handling going forward, especially if he struggles, and possibly impacting negotiations/relations with other young players.

i don't see the risk there either. players that want to sign these deals will, and guys like hoskins will probably hold out. not sure what there is to be worried about going forward.
