Phillies Sign Kingery to Six Year Deal

Is it that much of a loss? Do players really get that much money in arb, even in their 6th year?

I would take the guaranteed money and peace of mind for the next 6 seasons.

Kingery can now relax and play baseball without dealing with his contract status for the next 6 years. No contract talks, no arb meetings, etc.

There's a massive upside to this if they and he are very good in those option years

I agree. However, there is at least the possibility of discontent if Kingery really turns into a super star and he's locked in through age 32. Players tend to completely forget the financial security they got up front when they are way outperforming their contract at the end of it.

Let’s hope we have that problem.

Yep

Assuming he's a league average MLB player (which doesn't seem like a big stretch during the coverage), he becomes very affordable in prime years. And still very tradeable. If he's a star, it's one of those "top 5 contracts in the game" types that the nerds will quote

The risk is in his handling going forward, especially if he struggles, and possibly impacting negotiations/relations with other young players.

Out of curiosity, what's your beef with Kingery? I remembered there were people arguing with me about him being good after his first summer. Just went back to look and it was you (and Shore of course).

On a scale of 1 to Chris Brown, how pissed is he?

I find it surprising that he was a guy that is being thought of like this by the organization. It is kind of crazy that he is only the second player to have a deal of this type. I just never thought of him that way. If anything though, it just makes me think that I am wrong and that I should be more excited about him.

I think people are looking at this a little backwards. It's not that he's the first to be offered this kind of deal by them, he probably isn't. He's the first to weigh his ioptions and see the benefit to doing this. So it doesn't mean they think he's the best in the org, they just think it's a mutually beneficial deal right now

I never understood this. And I'm not singling you out. I saw a lot of this from Phillies fans here and on social media, and I kept trying to figure out what it was about Kingery that didn't click with fans.

I even saw his name come up too often in trade talks for pitchers like Chris Archer.

To me, Kingery was and is untouchable. I want him playing for the Phillies now and for the next decade.

The twin has a better hairstyle. I hate those lines in Scott's hair. More natural is the way to go!

I'm pissed that I missed him in my fantasy draft last night. My main rival picked him right before I was going to. This will likely haunt me for a decade (keeper league).

I read some say that the deal will send a positive message to players and agents but do agents really like this? I get the security side of it but it is possible that The King is leaving a ton of money on the table and agents tend to not like that.

I am much less concerned with the contract than I am with Kapler's wacky plan to Zobrist him without even trying it out in the minors first. Play him at second base. Heck have Cesar try to do it he's actually played the outfield before.
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

Yeah the excitement over handing Valentin a first-base mitt the other day gave me pause. I'm reminded of the Chris Rock bit about it being legal to drive with your feet if you want to....
