Phillies Sign Kingery to Six Year Deal

This is really right out of the Joe Banner playbook from the old CBA. Take some tail risk on a young, likely ascending player with the hope of getting great value later. Better strategy in baseball too since players won't be holding out or looking to rip up the contract later

And because baseball players careers usually last longer than 3 years

To those who are wondering about the Kingery skepticism, the only negative that is even remotely reasonable IMHO is his lack of control of the strike zone last year in AAA and again this spring. In AA and below he had a decent walk rate, but it cratered in AAA and never recovered. First hand observation: he was chasing a lot of low and away breaking pitches.

If he can learn to stay in the zone while he's in the big leagues this is a great contract.

Like others in this thread I'd play him at 2B and move Cesar around.

Yeah but if he is going to be a bust it won't be because of this contract imo. Unless he gets fat and lazy now.

Its a bad day to be Sam Kingery when the best you are getting is that you have the better hair of the twins (and I would agree with mtcall that a full head of hair would be an awesome upgrade from my receding hairline). He must be a hell of a nice guy to come to the signing w/o any grudges about being less then identical (wash out of the AZ squad).

The risk is in his handling going forward, especially if he struggles, and possibly impacting negotiations/relations with other young players.

Out of curiosity, what's your beef with Kingery? I remembered there were people arguing with me about him being good after his first summer. Just went back to look and it was you (and Shore of course).

I don't think I'd call it a beef. I just have significantly different view of his floor and ceiling based greatly on my "small sample size/I'm not a scout" personal observation.

I see his floor as a speedy utility guy who hangs around the majors too long because of his skin and style; his ceiling as a ever-so-slightly above average 2B. I HOPE I'M DEAD WRONG.

That the only time he dominated was 300 ABs with Reading is my issue with choosing him as the first for this type of deal. I'd have saved it for a prospect who at least excelled at every stop.

that kind of guy probably won't sign this kind of deal

I've already commented on the deal which is an incredible deal for the Phils, IMO.

The hair thing? They both have good hair.

I read some say that the deal will send a positive message to players and agents but do agents really like this? I get the security side of it but it is possible that The King is leaving a ton of money on the table and agents tend to not like that.

I'm sure they love it. Just to know the organization will do these deals. Doesn't mean they have to accept, but everyone loves having options.

Beats manipulating service time by sending a player down to triple a for a couple of weeks to get an extra year when said player clearly belongs on MLB roster. See acuna, braves

Yep. We know agents play games in the draft and definitely in the foreign free agency market. This can only help with getting them to direct their clients our way.

braves offered acuna $30M guaranteed and he declined.
