Just heard. Love it. Perfect length. Great job Klentak.

I'm seeing it on social media, even from some Phillies fans. What is driving this? I read that he lost some velocity on his fastball? Is that the reason?

Even here, I see some posting that he was last on their list.

That might be part of it. And the fear he is breaking down overall. I think the main concern is that he is a pitcher whose best pitch used to be his power slider, which he no longer gets good results on and which he mostly abandoned last year. But good veteran pitchers like him have ways of tweaking things and staying effective like he did in the second half. I'm excited about the signing.

The velocity thing is some of it but my biggest concern is that the Cubs, who are not a dumb organization and needed pitching went out and signed Yu when they already had Jake.

I’ll bet the Cubs would’ve gladly signed him at 3/75.
I hate signatures, but I love irony.

Heyman: Arrieta salaries are 30M, 25M and 20M. Can opt out after two. Deal could go to 5 years and be worth 125M to 135M. #phillies

Jon Heyman @JonHeyman
phillies can void the arrieta opt out by triggering a 2-year extension that starts at 20M per year, rises to 25M based on games started in first 2 years, or up to 30M based on cy young finishes. 135M possible. #phillies

So, mostly for my own visualization, the deal is:

2018: 30M
2019: 25M
--Arrieta can opt out or Phillies trigger extension---
2020: 20M
--only if extended--
2021: 20M w/escalators based on GS and CYA finishing
2022: 20M w/same escalators

That seems like a good deal for the Phillies. If Arrieta ends up having two big years, he gets paid either way, and the Phillies don't get screwed by the player opt-out, instead getting a pretty favorable built-in extension. In the more likely scenario that he declines, as pitchers in their 30s tend to do, they don't get killed by a long-term.

If Arrieta triggers his player opt-out after 2019, the Phillies have the option of superseding it by tacking on two additional years to the deal at 20M per or more based on escalators. Or, they can just let him go.

It's catching on. People are believing. Or maybe they just expect winning being in the city of champions. All Philly does is win right now. Next up, Nova(yes, it's a Philly school).

Based on what I saw in the second half last season plus the additions of Santana/Arrieta and full season of Hoskins, I'd say we'll be competing for that wild card.
