i was in the anyone-but-arrieta camp for a long time, but the fact that both pecota and steamer thing he'll be worth 2 wins in 2018 made me look again and find some signs of hope in his 2nd half stats. its probably an overpay... maybe as much as 100%... but a lot less than i thought he would get, and definitely affordable for the phils. plus he's replacing what most likely would have been a replacement level 4/5 starter, so we get full benefit of any positive value he has.

I'm seeing it on social media, even from some Phillies fans. What is driving this? I read that he lost some velocity on his fastball? Is that the reason?

Even here, I see some posting that he was last on their list.

The top 3 players (by WAR) to wear 38 in their careers (not necessarily while in philly) are Steve Carlton, Robin Roberts and Curt Schilling. Also clocking in at number 8 is Jim Bunning.

i saw some speculation on twitter last week that guys needed to be in camp by this past thursday to be ready for opening day. should be close enough, especially if nola is starting the opener.

didn't the unsigned guys have their own camp somewhere?

Yeah. Don’t believe he (or the other big names) attended.

at IMG Academy in Florida but it wasn't open to the public; not sure how many players were/are there

Yes, but press was not allowed on the grounds so there’s no list of who actually went to it, some agencies also ran their own camps, the players weren’t playing ST games and I wouldn’t be surprised if the top flight guys didn’t participate, because if they get hurt, they aren’t under contract and won’t get paid.

That might be part of it. And the fear he is breaking down overall. I think the main concern is that he is a pitcher whose best pitch used to be his power slider, which he no longer gets good results on and which he mostly abandoned last year. But good veteran pitchers like him have ways of tweaking things and staying effective like he did in the second half. I'm excited about the signing.

Not saying he stinks but I can't allow myself to expect any better than a 3.75 ERA over 175 IP. His greatest value will be the perception of the signing by pending FAs and fans.

Sounds good to me.

The Phillies will finish 2nd in this division. They are better than the Mets who have a lineup devoid of power and no bullpen. Within the next couple of seasons the Phillies are going to own this division for quite a while. The Nationals are an awful combination of aging veterans and overhyped young guys. This is their last season to "contend" which in their terms is lose in the NLDS again and come up small like they always do.

Obviously lost a little stuff. His short lived days of an ace are probably behind him. He knows how to pitch and should be a good #2 this year, #3 the following year and a 4 in his final year.

Might be a little pricey for that projection, but the phillies have cash to burn, solidifies the top of the rotation, helps to make you competitive, hopefully able to attract the likes of a Harper or Machado and it is only three years.

So good deal for the phillies.

The velocity thing is some of it but my biggest concern is that the Cubs, who are not a dumb organization and needed pitching went out and signed Yu when they already had Jake.
