Phillies General Discussion II: The Season of Suck Continues

An example of the opposite of the Phils thinking on prospects from an article today...

The Red Sox wanted to see Pablo Sandoval drop some pounds -- not some OPS from what was already pitiful production in his time in Boston. The Panda has quickly surrendered his everyday spot in the lineup, but it's not as if Boston is teeming with other attractive options there after, regrettably, trading Travis Shaw. The most intriguing in-house option would be to promote Rafael Devers, who is holding his own against Double-A competition at just 20 years old. Scouts are split as to whether he can handle the hot corner at the big leagues, and skipping Triple-A would be a big jump, but there might be value to calling up the kid early and letting him work through the adjustment in time to potentially leave his mark on the late-season race.

Yes, they are in contention but seemingly wouldn't be afraid to promote a 20 year old who is raking
Even if you get run over by a clown car and pissed on by a busload of school children, it's still your responsibility to interpret the meaning of the event and choose a response

Except Boston is 2 back in the east and holds a 3.5 game lead for the wild card, they've decided they want to take a risk of possibly losing a guy or starting a clock early because the upside is either getting to the play in game or passing the yanks to even avoid it.

I'm fine with slow playing Kingery now, what happens if he comes up now and rakes? Ok we know what we have now, but if he comes up next year and rakes and then we bought a year of not having to protect him.

Nick Williams on the other hand...

Scott Kingery is 23 now. We control him for 6 full major league seasons, right? And this one won't count (<172 days) if we bring him up.

So, we'll control him from ages 24-29. The only thing holding him back does is potentially give us a year of full control rather than arbitration, right?

We're not poor, so the arb thing is bullshit. If he's great, we're paying him, and it's worth it. Worrying about whether we have to extend a kid who's not played AAA yet in 6 years or 7 is ridiculous.

Call up Alfaro, 'cause our catchers suck, and Williams (Saunders). I wish we had a 3B, even just to wake Maik the fuck up. And, please, put some decent arms in the bullpen.

i'm on the fence with kingery i can see either way (if they're not bringing him up here, at least put him in AAA already, jeez)

But Alfaro from everything I hear has no business here, not just because he's walked only twice more than you and I this year in AAA, but his defense I hear is 'improving' but still extremely suspect. With a young staff, that's going to be pretty rough on them. I know that Knapp and Rupp aren't doing much, but I worry about Jorge.
Not everything I think is something I should say.

I don't think the arb/controllable years are the issue, at least I hope not. If he's good enough that we are going to have to give him a contract that impacts the financials of this team going forward then that's a good problem for us. What I'm reading is that it's a 40 man roster spot concern, they don't have to protect him until 2019, but if they bring him up now they have to protect him next year. I don't know who else has to be protected or we are in danger of losing, just echoing what I'd heard from the tv crew which I'm assuming they'd gotten from the fo.

Agree with the rest though, if someone is on the 40 now, bring them up. Nothing to lose at this point.

I'll bet we can find some chaff among the wheat on the 40-man.

That's because what the Phillies play is not actually baseball.

Yeah, the major league season is going about as poorly as possible but it is way too early to call the rebuild a failure
