Phillies General Discussion II: The Season of Suck Continues

Galvis has seemingly made a concerted effort to see more pitches. He has a 8.7% BB% since 4/30. That's really positive and I think he's capable of a 100 wRC+ season with the best SS defense in the NL. That's valuable

The 1 run loses would be easier to swallow if the team occasionally scored a few runs, but then the pitching would absolutely suck.

I love Whitey but his OPS is in the mid 400s. Time to move on and offer him a spot in the organization.

11-23 in one run games (looks like the texas is next at 6-14). I'm going to take this as a positive - just need to tweak things a bit

Putting some nice distance between us and other contenders for the #1 pick. Giants are 4.5 games back but MadBum is returning soon. The Reds and Padres are 9.5 back. Then there's a gaggle of teams 10.5 back (A's, White Sox and Tigers). The A's, Reds and Padres are the biggest threats in my opinion. If Bumgarner doesn't come back healthy (got rocked in a rehab) than the Giants would be too.

My way too early top 5 for 2018:

1) Kumar Rocker, RHP, HS
2) Brady Singer, RHP, Florida
3) Brice Turang, SS, HS
4) Joe Gray Jr, OF, HS
5) Ethan Hankins, RHP, HS

The best high school prospect is apparently 2019 SS Bobby Witt Jr (yes Bobby Witt's son). He's not quite Bryce Harper level hype but it's starting to build a little. I'm hoping a great Summer might make him think about reclassifying. He'd be the consensus #1 pick.

he'll just complete the coursework and graduate a year early. fairly common for basketball recruits to do it. harper got his ged after his sophomore year, played a year at a jc and entered pro ball early.

Yeah, I only was thinking about the reclassification because Triston Casas, a 1B/3B high school prospect from Florida did it.

“I kind of wish the All Star Break wasn’t now,” Williams said. “I want to keep going. I’ve been loving this experience and this grind up here. It is a grind. I think I’ve been facing 95 (mph)-plus on every starter, but . . . it’s great to do it. I’d take it every day.”

Good that Nick Williams likes it... let's bring up a couple more guys and see if they like it too

Good vibes to think that known racist John Rocker would have a kid named Kumar in fantasy land (His father is former NFL lineman Tracy Rocker). He plays Football as well and lists as a 1B/Pitcher. 16 year-old measuring 6’5/230 lbs and whirls a right handed 90-94 mph top end. He's a Vandy commit at the moment.

Awesomely I found this description

He is by all means an SEC caliber defensive end that tosses lineman around like a tornado in a trailer park and sacks most mobile of quarterbacks.

if odub isn't going anywhere, there's no reason to bring up an OF right? altherr and nick most of the rest of the year barring injury until september?

1b is the spotlight. Cataldi still screaming and (level headed?) Morganti pointing out that if you trade Joseph and Hoskins doesn't cut it then you're at square 0 at 1b.

2b the great Kingery debate - pretty sure he's gona spend the season down there - any update on hail Cesar?

SS Freddy is making it pretty tough for management to get JPC up here even with Crawford's recent hitting.

3B still gotta see what Franco can do

C Alfaro doesn't look ready for prime time - more Knapp time I guess?

SP - Guess Hellickson might get moved for one more starter to join the rotation from AAA

BP - some young arms to get some chances I suppose if some vets get sold off?

--

barring injuries on all this, of course
Not everything I think is something I should say.

I think there are lots of in house solutions at first base if Joseph is traded and Hoskins fails. First though, I agree with the outfield situation. Let these guys play it out. Secondly, get cozens a first baseman glove, let him get some reps in practice and hopefully a few starts. Granted they don't provide much value as far as production, but if Kingery or Alfaro were to get promoted it could send Hernandez to third and Franco to first, or maybe with Crawford and Freddy. With Alfaro, it could send knapp over to first base. Even though pullin is going through some adjustments at AAA, once he gets back on track, he gets a first baseman glove also.

I get it with the OF's though I'd like to see Cozens in the mix at least in September... my other thought is there is no AAAA... do we want Kingery, Hoskins, Cozens, Crawford, Quinn all on the roster next year as brand new rookies without any experience... in some cases like Kingery and Hoskins, they have performed their way out of AAA and it wouldn't be beneficial to send them back in 2018... is it best for Crawford/Quinn to come back for another year plus you need to make room for the next wave of kids coming up to the Pigs... maybe some of these guys get packaged for pitching but there has to be some movement...

from recent comments, I'd say Hoskins is up by the end of July if not sooner, Cozens possibly late July or in August but he can wait for a Sept call up when the Pigs are done... Crawford a Sept call up... Quinn depends on health but he could be anytime... Kingery may debut in April due to the 40 man situation and they need to figure out what to do with Cesar

A Hellickson trade clears them to go with a rotation of Nola-Eickhoff-Pivetta-Velasquez-Lively with Thompson, Eflin, Leiter Jr. getting another chance with an injury

Therrien gets a shot in the pen... try converting Appel in the offseason as a last resort

-Also wouldn't be shocked if Haseley is ready by the end of 2018... some moves will have to be made
