I wonder what the Phillies would have to add to trade Howard for ARod. That is a deal I could actually see both teams having interest in.

I think you seriously underestimate the difference between first base and third base. It's huge.

Compared to Ben Johnson run-alike A-Rod?

The truth is, I don't really care about the base running and defensive aspects of WAR. But even if I did, I don't really get what A-Rod's WAR relative to third baseman (and DH?) and Howard's to 1B means in comparing the contracts or in a theoretical trade discussion. You'd have to consider the value of the players in the context of their respective teams' strengths and weaknesses.

ARod: 924 OPS vs LHP in 2012, .717 OPS vs. RHP in 2012

Howard: .604 OPS v LHP in 2012, .784 OPS v.RHP in 2012

I think it is pretty even in value given their relative positions. The salaries aren't that far off.

I like it better when we don't talk about Ryan Howard and his contract because he pretty much blows now and the contract is even worse than it was when it was signed which is hard to believe because it was horrifically bad even then and made me cry so your cooperation is appreciated with my attempt to keep this out of sight out of mind and so on.

I don't think using howards 2012 numbers is really fair. He clearly wasn't 100 percent.

I think it's funny that he signed this contract like two and a half years ago

A-Rod against fastballs in 2012: .301/.395/.490, when putting fastballs in play, .393/.385/.639

I thought his problem was a lack of power after the hand injury. Which of course will heal fabulously this winter as Howard just gets older and fatter

I'm not a doctor, and no two injuries are alike, but the typical impact/recovery rate of a broken hand from a pitch seems more promising than an Achilles rupture. The way I look at it, they both had the worst season of their careers in 2012, and A-Rod had a near 60 point advantage in OBP and about the same SLG. Factoring in that he plays a not-great-but-serviceable third base for the moment, I think it's highly likely that he'll be more valuable than Howard over the next 5 years. Of course, it's not a guarantee. He's also 4 years older. But I'd do that trade straight up. I'd be willing to bet it would be a push in the worst case scenario. That all being said, I don't think the Yankees are that serious about dumping off A-Rod, and this will all cool down when the entire city is done being all NY Post about it.
