I grabbed him in an auction league for $2, Utley was ridic cheap too as was the three aces.

$2? What kind of league is that, an 8-team mixed?

10 team custom. His default price was $6, but everyone spunked their loads early. I still snagged Miggy, Pujols and Trout too. My rotation is weaker than I like, but SP's were the big pricehogs early. Verlander, Kershaw and King Felix went for more than Miggy and Trout.

Out of an abundance of caution, I'm going to put this here:

Zack Greinke rhp
6 years/$147M (2013-18)

6 years/$147M (2013-18)
signed by LA Dodgers as a free agent 12/10/12

$12M signing bonus (paid in multiple installments, 12/2012 – 2/2014)
13:$17M, 14:$24M, 15:$23M, 16:$24M, 17:$23M, 18:$24M

Greinke may opt out of contract after 2015 season
if traded, Greinke receives $3M assignment bonus and may opt out of the contract at season’s end
2018 salary increases by $2M with 1,000 innings pitched in 2013-17
if Greinke wins Cy Young, his salary for the following season increases by $1M ($0.5M increase with 2-5 finish in Cy Young vote)
if Greinke wins 2018 Cy Young, he receives a $1M award bonus ($0.5M award bonus with 2-5 finish in 2018 Cy Young vote)

Not sure how this contract avoided this thread until now:

Johan Santana lhp

6 years/$137.5M (2008-13), plus 2014 club option
acquired in trade from Minnesota 2/2/08 (Santana waived no-trade clause and agreed to new 6-year deal, replacing final year of previous contract)
08:$19M, 09:$20M, 10:$21M, 11:$22.5M, 12:$24M, 13:$25.5M, 14:$25M club option ($5.5M buyout)
full no-trade clause
$5M deferred annually at 1.25% compound interest (payable June 30 seven years after season in which salary was earned), reducing present-day value of package to $123.1M
award bonuses: $0.5M-$1.5M for Cy Young (varies based on number won), $0.25M each for MVP or World Series MVP, $0.1M each for All Star selection, LCS MVP, post-season MVP, post-season All Star, Gold Glove, Silver Slugger
2014 club option becomes player option if Santana:
wins Cy Young award from 2008-13 and finishes second or third in the Cy Young vote in one other season
ranks second or third in Cy Young vote in any 3 seasons, 2008-13
is on the active roster for the final 30 days of 2013 season, and:
pitches 215 innings in 2013, or
pitches 420 innings in 2012-13, or
pitches 630 innings in 2011-13
the party holding the 2014 option must exercise it by Nov. 15, 2013
if 2014 option is Santana’s and he declines it, he receives no buyout
perks: hotel suite on road trips, 15-person suite for 2008 home games
Santana to donate $0.25M annually to Mets charity
The Phillies: People trading People to People.

I'm actually a little jealous that they're only paying him 15 million this year and next year. After that, not so much.

I know Pujols was off to a cold start last year, so his stats at this point are meaningless, but still:

.231/.317/.397/.714

Oh yeah, he's 33. And they're "only" paying him $16M this year... he gets wildly more expensive starting next year, to the tune of $26.5M/season AAV... for eight more seasons.

Howard is having a better season in every respect at this point, is the same age, and is only signed for 4 more years at an AAV $24.5M/season:

.282/.320/.513/.833

We'll see how it comes out when the season is all said and done, of course (I am sure Pujols will end up with better numbers than Howard, but maybe not hugely so), but the thing I think about when I look at all of these contracts is why the "common wisdom" on long-term contracts handed out to veterans continues to be to back-load them. You kill yourself that way - you pay more and more for less and less. At least Howard is $25M steadily until the last season, when he drops to $23M. Pujols' number keeps rising and rising, until they are paying him $30M a season in his forties.

It's cheaper for the team to backload, given the same amount of money. That's why it's done. I know you know about the time value of money.

There's also an expectation that a strong team performance in the short-term will lead to increased revenues in subsequent seasons.

I know it is cheaper in real dollars, but it is "cheaper" in terms of the toll it takes on your organization when you find yourself paying a late-30s player putting up OPS+s in the 85-100 range salaries like $30M? Doesn't it make more sense to pay for the production when, you know, you're actually getting it?

Albert Pujols' deal:

◾10 years/$240M (2012-21)
◾signed by LA Angels as a free agent 12/8/11
◾12:$12M, 13:$16M, 14:$23M, 15:$24M, 16:$25M, 17:$26M, 18:$27M, 19:$28M, 20:$29M, 21:$30M
◾full no-trade protection
◾milestone bonuses: $3M for 3,000 hits, $7M for 763 HRs
◾up to $0.875M annually in award bonuses. $0.5M for MVP ($75,000 each for 2nd or 3rd in vote). $0.1M for WS MVP. $75,000 each for Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, LCS MVP. $50,000 for All-Star
◾perks: hotel suite on road, luxury suite for Pujols charity for 10 home games each season, right to buy luxury suite between first and third base for all home games
◾10-year, $10M personal-services contract begins once player contract expires

I left out the $10M personal services deal at the end when I named the sums above. I don't care who Albert Pujols was or even is now, this is an awful contract.

Structuring a contract this way is like buying a car on a payment plan where your monthly payment goes up to its highest levels as the car's value moves to zero. I understand the time value of money, but you wouldn't buy a car like that... why sign a player on that philosophy?
