World Series 2008 Games 5.1 & 5.2 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Gotta admit, I find it funny that every single time people have talked about the Rays having the "advantage", they lose.

Garza v. Moyer: Rays advantage
Sonnanstine v. Blanton: Rays advantage.

Afterward, Selig retroactively declares field was unplayable, beginning in the top of the 26th. See y'all in two more days.

All today is is a one day reprieve from a miserable off-season for these morons.

I still cant get over this

11:32 p.m. ET
More from Selig, who says there is no chance this game will be picked up in Tampa. It will be resumed in Philly.

Really. No chance of playing game 5, a home game for the Phillies, in Tampa.

Astounding.

Just got off the phone with the Astros. Did he ever say it wouldn't be moved to Milwaukee?

Don't laugh. Many years ago I saw one vagrant doing just that to another in the lobby of the Reading Terminal. True story.

I wanted to get something in here about Ryan Howard that apparently isn’t coming through in my writing this week. Howard should be platooned, because his combination of offense and defense at first base when a lefty pitches is basically replacment level. And the reporting around his performance in the postseason has a huge hole in it; he was hitting righties just fine and lefties not at all when he came to the plate midway through Saturday’s game. He simply wasn’t getting any chance to affect a game by facing righthanders.

I keep harping on this point because there is no more dangerous situation in this series, perhaps in the NL, than Ryan Howard with a right-handed pitcher on the mound. I’m killing Maddon for his decisionmaking precisely because I have so much respect for Howard’s ability to destroy righties. He’s a limited player in that he doesn’t do a lot of things baseball players can do to help their team win, but what he does do-hit for power and draw walks against righties-is very valuable. Not “Most” valuable, not by a long shot, but enough so that not taking that opportunity away from him whenever you can is probably the biggest mistake you can make against the Phillies.

Ryan Howard kills righties. That doesn’t mean he does anything else well. The gap between those two notions is where we’ve lived this week.

Kruk: Delay helps the Phillies because Phils' bullpen is better.

i love baseball but instant replay needs to be used for a lot more things, and the postseason needs to be fixed... i mean a team like the phils is going to win the world series (2 years after a team like the cardinals won... just feel they play 162... and the real best team is not being crowned).

So they let Hamels pitch the TOP of the inning tonight in crapola conditions but now the Rays can pitch the BOTTOM of the inning whenever in perfect conditions? I don't mind suspending the game with the score tied but doesn't that give the Rays staff a half inning of better mound conditions? 1/2 inning may not be much in the grand scheme of things but, hey, it's only the world series. They should have 1) called it at the end of the 5th inning or 2) after the 6th inning. It's not like it was going to magically clear up in the 2 minutes in the middle of the sixth. MLB could've handled this worse, but they certainly could've done a whole lot better.

At least the rain delay gave the commentators another chance to fawn over Joe Maddon and the Rays. I am not entirely sure they realize there is another team playing.

I heard Selig's newsconference. If he is telling the truth, then why bother to start the top of the 6th when the field was obviously unplayable - to the point that there was no possible way to defend a stolen base?

Dear Bud Selig,

Who died and left you king to decide upon a game should rest solely on your call? Did you all of the sudden become a baseball GOD? Oh, OK you can overturn rules now? Give me a break! The incompetence of this man is amazing and how he is still our commissioner is hard to believe. Baseball has been around for over a hundred years and this guy alone can determine if a game is suspended? I'm sorry but Bud, that is what rules committees are for and games have been called due to rain after 5 innings for as long as I can remember. What makes this game any different? I wouldn't mind if the 2 teams that actually playing this crummy weather game come together and decided what is best. Talking it over and having the umpires determine what and if a game is called. Not some 4 eyed putz up in his heated luxury box who single handily ruined a sport with steroids making his word said from high above like some holy figure in the raining sky!

Oh yeah, by the way.....good call moving the series to November next year. Can't wait to see what that weather will be like! Tonight's weather is nothing compared to a nice balmy 5 degree night in November with 6 inches of snow coming down in Philadelphia in a week from now. Way to think it through.
